I think it dropped off slightly towards the latter years (that's what ITV told me at the time) but there was a general decline in children's TV audiences on terrestrial TV due to competition from satellite/cable.

Indeed, the most popular CITV/CBBC shows nowadays only get about 2 million viewers.

I think four million's about right actually. It did peak at six million at one stage but I think that was around '91-'92 when the series became more famous.
