<![CDATA[RIP Caroline John]]>Some rather sad news announced to day. Caroline John, who played the Third Doctor's debut companion Liz Shaw, died a little over two weeks ago at the age of 72. Liz Shaw was one of the best, but also most under-explored of the Doctor's companions through the 1970's. That such a refreshingly assertive foil for the Doctor only got one full season seems a travesty really (though her departure was beyond the BBC's control). Caroline John herself was probably not the greatest actress the series has ever seen, but she improved as the 1970 season wore on, and she always maintained an affectionate support for the series after leaving it.

Another iconic assistant of the past is lost to us...

I don't know enough about this companion to really have an opinion as such, but it's sad that we're losing classic Who actors at a seemingly rapid rate these days.
