I do like trying to piece together the remnants of the quests that failed on level two. Interestingly, I've just compiled a list of rooms and tunnels in level two from the three longest quests of this series and discovered a correlation. The Cavern Range, I technically count as one room even though there are three and the number of rooms counts the Spindizzy too

Leo:

Rooms: 9

Tunnel: 4

Ross:

Rooms: 9

Tunnel: 2

Martin:

Rooms: 9

Tunnel: 5

Simon:

Rooms: 3

Tunnel: 1

So we can only assume that the following room after the Cavern Range would have to yield the third step clue. Considering they had two already 'cat' and 'dog', it would only seem fitting that the raven would give them the third clue, presumably 'bird' before going onto Merlins' chamber, which by the time they leave there would be four rooms remaining which includes the mining cart tunnel. The Corridor of the Catacombes is typically met in level two also along with the Twist Room (though this room never appeared in Leo's quest), so that could potentially leave one or two remaining.

It could be conceivable that this team were destined to claim the SWORD spell to use on Hordriss, but maybe the production team decided to implement it into Leo's quest after Simon failed. I couldn't imagine what other magic they could use on Hordriss without humiliating him in the process. Perhaps a FREEZE spell? Who knows

I would love to believe this is true, but I think it may be Deborah on our left saying "Mark, you direct him."

He would've met Merlin quite late in this level, there wouldn't be many rooms left to explore before hitting the transition to level three

That's a good observation. Of the six teams that reached 'Death Valley II' a.k.a. the caverns in Series 3 (Teams 2, 3, 4, 6, 10 and 11), Team 3 is the only team that hadn't met Merlin beforehand. That is strange in itself.

I would speculate that the manifestation of Hordriss' face was meant to be a prelude to a proper introduction to him later in the same quest, and that that encounter was carried over to the next quest.

Hordriss' isolated appearance in this quest meant he was named in the end credits before he was named on screen. Mellisandre and Morghanna shared this distinction. This would have intrigued many young watchers, adding to the richness of Series 3.

Team 3 picked up an amulet of invisibility, then had confusion getting out of the clue room, while a (possibly) sinister presence began to manifest. We got the first ever glimpse of Hordriss, who would become a Knightmare legend.

What happened next in the stalactite cavern had a sense of inevitability about it.

(team with poor directing) + (amulet of invisibility) + (cavern with obscure exit) = ooooh naaaasty!

Did team 3 think the exit was out of the back of the cavern? When Simon put the amulet down to check his position he was facing diagonally left, straight towards the exit, but then Mark told him to turn right, move forwards, then sidestep right! Over the edge went Simon....

Admittedly i am biased coz team 4 were Kentish, but immediately they looked like a very efficient team.

Made short work of level 1. Scored 3/3 against Brangwen Shee, with no prompting. Amusing scene with Motley & Olaf.

Leo was into the well at serious speed to avoid that falling axe.

Got caught by the axe for some life force damage in the 5-exit room, tho i don't think they could have avoided it. Next up was the level 2 clue room with food anyway. Just about to listen to the Oracle for clues when the bell sounded.

Saw from when Simon picked up the amulet and I believe Hordriss laughing. Go to a cave? with goblins searching, which Simon is guided close to the exit. He is then asked to put the amulet down, where we see him almost facing the door. He is then asked to pick the amulet back up and then to turn to the right. He is then directed towards the edge and so close to the edge is asked to sidestep to the right, which he then falls off the cliff.

Knew team, Leo's start off in the dice room, where we see a Chalis symbol right above the middle door, which they take. They end up in the cave of fire with a haunting. Is this the first haunting we see? Meet Melisandre in a room with a trapdoor and four exits. Melisandre is about to give them an important message, when she falls through the trapdoor. They then take the door on the immediate right. In the clue room done really well and got three riddles right, which I guessed two of. In the room with the scorpian, was it me or did Leo put his foot slightly off the edge, where the floor is missing? Used the key from the clueroom to open the exit door. On a ledge Leo's chased by Olaf and eventually he meets up with Motley, who retrieves his folderol from Leo and gives it to Olaf to get rid of him. In the Corridor with a moving wall they take the right exit into the wellroom where Mellisandre is again. After Mellisandre Leo goes down the well, guarded with an axe that lowers as he gets in.

Level 2 Leo ends up on spin dizzy and appears to wobble slightly as he moves forward. He is guided off the spin dizzy through the right exit. In a room with exits that show a giants foot, there is yet another axe above one of the exits. When reaching the desired exit the axe follows him and hits him with a knice sound effect, which causes lifeforce damage. The next room leads to a table with food and The Oracle of Illusion. Just get the food on time as his lifeforce was about to runout. Timeout then occured as Leo lifted his helmet up to listen to the oracle.

Hmm did anyone hear the announcers comment about Treguard during the end credits?

They seemed to think that the path was forward, when it was actually to the left. Splat!

Mellisandre later appeared in Team 4's quest standing behind a trapdoor. Hmm, I wonder what happened next? Still, they spanned the pit and crossed the zone in time to run away screaming from Olaf (something I'd probably do too), Motley distracting him with his jester toy-like thing. Mellisandre obviously managed to perform a daring and courageous escape from the trapdoor's innards in time to re-meet Leo and Co in the Level 1 wellway room, and now they're in Level 2. I do like how Treguard incorporates his 'Temporal Disruption Imminant' speil whilst the quest is still in progress (seemingly done by having Hugo Myatt record the lines several months after series filming ended), shame they only did it in this series. Still, the end credit animation looked like a very early version of the minecart ride, the final version we should hopefully see soon!

We saw the dungeoneer both leap off the Spindizzy and zoom into the doorway in the crystal ball recap scene, and then the screen cut straight to the red corridor.

Tackled the new-look Corridor of Spears, which was haunted by one of those floating skulls (first appearance!). If I was an advisor, I would have made the dungeoneer sidestep once to the left before running between the spears. I think they also got spiked by the 2nd set of spears, but were let off.

The dungeoneer found an Amulet of Invisibility in the next room! Just like the invisibility talisman from series 2, but this time there was a star on the screen so you could see where the dungeoneer was. Also Hordriss appeared for the first time as a ghost in the wall!

In the next room, used the invisibility to get past the goblins - but then guided the dungeoneer out of the cave mouth and off a cliff! Ooh, nasty!

Next team got the dice room as usual, except when the big dice opened up there was a flashing cup symbol above the middle door. I guess the crew didn't want them to take the right door again

Then tackled the Room of Fire, which was also haunted by a floating skull. Seemed to be no way of getting through with the skull blocking both doorways! However, the skull kindly moved out of the way to let them pass after getting through the flames

Next, Mellisandra fell down a trap door just as she was giving an important message!

Goblins followed the dungeoneer in the tunnel, then got to the Level 1 clue room. 2nd appearance of the Brangwen, and they scored 3/3 on the riddles!

Brangwen clearly told them that the gold was 'fools gold' so it was obvious which items to take. However, I think they could have taken the gold and still been in winning status!

I think they got stung by the scorpion, but were let off.

Olaf chased them on the cliff room - had they taken the gold, they probably could have bribed him (lootings) to get past. As it is, Motley took back his jester staff and used it on Olaf to make him laugh!

After getting through the Corridor of Catacombs (moving wall), they met Mellisandre again in the wellway room. There was an axe above the wellway, which lowered as the dungeoneer got in!

On the Spindizzy, one of the doors had a cup above it, and the rest had skulls. I guess if he had taken one of the skull doors, they would have been killed off instantly in the next room.

In the 5-door room, as well as the giant's foot there was another axe above one of the doors. Oddly, they wanted to go through the door with the axe above it! The axe came down and severely damaged their life force as they went through the door.

Level 2 clue room - one object only, some food. There was also an Oracle in this room. To hear it, the dungeoneer must close his eyes and raise the helmet above his head. However, temporal disruption occurred just as he raised the helmet!

Knice ending graphics under the credits - a bat flying down a mine shaft - sign of things to come?
