Already I can hear the knives coming out, ready to be thrust deep into my back...

Like most of us, I used to love Treguard's most famous line. How we always loved the gruesome moment of death, with blood flying, resonant chimes of a death knell, an electronic skull falling to bits, and all rounded off with Hugo Myatt's sinister tones.... "Ooooooo nasty!"

Truth is, it makes me yawn these days. There was a time when he was doing it on instinct, and it worked, sounded like he was being both accurate and understated.

But by S8 he was doing it every time, very deliberately, very consciously, and at times forcing it into the scene where it didn't feel very natural. I get bored with it, I really do.

I wish he'd have thrown in a few more of his disingenuous, "Oh dear, what a pity, never mind" sneers, just to vary it a bit.

Your thoughts everyone? (Please skip over the "I hate you and hope you die in horrified torment for daring to say such blasphemy, Storm!" thoughts as they kind of go without saying.)

(Do people still remember the 'Ooh, nice tea' joke that I posted last year?) But, by Series 8, I felt that Hordriss' use of the pronoun 'one' was excessive, and no longer intimidating. Perhaps he should have spoken more Latin...

Hugo coined it for Daniel's death in the bomb room in S1, and again during the Folly v Cedric insults thing. From there he just used it more and more frequently, and it really struck a chord with people.

Yes, in a way, I guess a lot of these little talking points must have really helped popularize the show in playgrounds around the country. To be honest, if he *had *ever stopped saying it, I bet there'd be threads on this board complaining about the fact and saying it was somehow linked to the ultimate demise of the show.

Dear oh dear, are our own love-lives so empty that we have to start speculating like this? Don't answer that!

Can I just say, I wasn't actually knocking the old "oooh nasty" line when I started this thread. I do like it very much, and it became an integral part of the show's character. (I'm sure I'm not the only one here who catches himself muttering "oooo nasty!" whenever they see someone bleeding, and we all know where I picked it up from!)

I'm just complaining that Hugo Myatt got a bit carried away with it in the long run. I think it's because by around 92 he was getting so much fanmail because of it he almost felt like he had a duty to throw it in at any and every opportunity. Which is a shame 'cos he wore out the understated magic of it i.e. its throwaway simplicity.

He said it with such a beautiful mix of primary indifference and secondary amusement.

Treguard was so much more fun back then, when he was a sadist. There were times (remember when Stuart was in the pendulum corridor?) when Treguard almost seemed to be getting a sexual thrill out of seeing the dungeoneers in danger. And yes, he also enjoyed seeing the inhabitants of the dungeon getting smashed around too. He was a real voyeur of sadism.
