It's been a while since I saw this quest, but if I recall correctly, they made a bunch of bad decisions in level 1, but still managed to survive?
Or am I thinking of a different quest?

I can't recall any mistakes off the top of my head, but, I also haven't watched that particular quest for a while, so they could well have made a few blunders. However, I do remember them being quite argumentative with each other, which I suppose is one big mistake in itself.
