Knightmare QI

Post by HStorm »

The rules in this quiz are based on the BBC panel quiz QI: Quite Interesting.

If you give a correct answer you get one point. You get up to two bonus points if you can embellish a correct answer with some Quite Interesting supplementary details. Give a wrong, but unusual answer, and you'll get zero points for it. Give an answer that is not only wrong, but is also cliched and pathetically-obvious, you will lose at least ten points.

If you want to play, please PM your answers to me rather than post them here (for obvious reasons).

1. What species is the Brollachan?

2. What was the most frequent quest killer in Knightmare?

3. What was the first spell cast in Knightmare using the standard chants?

4. What species is Smirkenorff?

5. What type of wizard is Lord Fear?

6. What nationality is Grimaldine the Green Wizard?

7. What is the name of the palace Maldame stole from Lord Fear?

8. What was the device that dungeon characters were incarcerated in by the neck and wrists so that passers-by could hurl rotten fruit 'n' veg at them?

9. What nationality is Olaf the Dead?

10. Which is the odd one out; Cedric, Mogdred, Brother Mace or Brother Strange?

11. In how many episodes of season 7 did the original Helmet Of Justice appear?

12. Name the first robot to inhabit the dungeon.

I'm working on another KMQI quiz. If you like, instead of posting it on the forum, I can send it to you to put in TES?

Okay, here are the answers...

1.   What species is the Brollachan?
Cliche:    "Wall monster". Although it was able to phase through walls, it didn't appear to be a wall itself.
Treguard stated that the Brollachan was supposed to be extinct, therefore they were probably a species in their own right.

2.   What was the most frequent quest killer in Knightmare?
Cliche:   "Corridor of Blades". It only claimed four deaths in series history.
The most common killer was falling from a height, which happened no fewer than eighteen times (including four quests in a row in series 3)! If you want me to be more precise, the most common fall was causeway puzzles, which ended six quests.

3.   What was the first spell cast in Knightmare using the standard chants?
Cliche:   "FREEZER". This was the first spell cast by a team.
Treguard cast the DISMISS spell in the first episode.

4.   What species is Smirkenorff?
Cliche: "Dragon". Dragons are real and come from the Far East.
Smirkenorff is a wyrm (crested green), which according to some legends is so-called because it shares a common ancestor with the lowly earthworm! Wyrms are often referred to as dragons, but for all the similarities, there is no evidence that the legend of the wyrm is based on dragons.

5.   What type of wizard is Lord Fear?
Cliche:   "Technomancer". While a case can be made for its legitimacy, the term was never used at any stage in series history to describe Lord Fear, although the term "Technomancy" was used once or twice.
Fear was a Technosorcerer.

6.    What nationality is Grimaldine the Green Wizard?
Cliche:    "Celtic". Contrary to myth, the Scots, the Welsh, the Irish and the Cornish are not really Celtic. The Celts dominated most of Europe before the rise of the Roman Empire, but never reached the British Isles in any great numbers.
Grimaldine was a Broll. At a stretch, I would also accept the answer "Cornish" or even "English"; it's unclear which time Grimaldine comes from, so Cornwall might still have been a kingdom in its own right, or an English county.

7.   What is the name of the palace Maldame stole from Lord Fear?
Cliche:   "Linghorn". This is a mis-spelling.
The correct spelling is Linghorm.

8.   What was the device that dungeon characters were incarcerated in by the neck and wrists so that passers-by could hurl rotten fruit vegetables at them?
Cliche:   "Stocks". The stocks were the device that incarcerated them on the ground by their ankles.
The device that incarcerated people while they were more or less upright was a pillory.

9.   What nationality is Olaf the Dead?
Cliche:   "Viking". The term does not signify a nationality, but simply means, 'Raider'.
He might have been Danish, but given the Norse name, the more northern accent, and that his brother was Erik The Red, he was almost certainly a Norwegian.

10.   Which is the odd one out; Cedric, Mogdred, Brother Mace or Brother Strange?
Cliche:   "Mogdred, because he isn't a monk". It is highly debatable whether Mace is a monk either, even though he refers to himself as a 'Tavern monk'.
Mace is the odd one out, as he was the only one who never wore a monk's robe. Instead he wore the habit of a Franciscan Friar (which also makes him an anachronism). The idea that friars and monks are the same thing is a simplification; they are very similar in their roles, but friars are scholars and travelling missionaries, whereas monks rarely journey beyond the walls of their home monasteries.

11.   In how many episodes of season 7 did the original Helmet Of Justice appear?
Cliche:    "None."
Cliche:    "Two: the episodes when a corpse is shown in the pillory in Level Three."
The answer is all of them. The dungeoneer is wearing the original incarnation of the Helmet in the title sequence.

12.   Name the first robot to inhabit the dungeon.
Cliche:    "The Automaton."
Automaton is not a name but a noun. The correct name is the Automatum.

Congratulations, EyeShield, you are the winner, and your prize is a grand total of nothing at all.

Please keep your eyes open for another KMQI quiz, which will be in the next issue of The Eye Shield, as mentioned above.

How come you only got 3 points, then? ;)

I hope you'll enter the next Knightmare QI in the upoming issue of TES, Pooka. I'm slightly worried that no one will.

I only got 3 because I got the spell question wrong. I was trying to be clever and assumed DISMISS would be the cliché, in that I thought advisors would be taught how to spellcast pretty much from the very start!

And yes, I'll enter.

Right, we now have a contest leader! :D It's Pooka, with a total of -7 points! Yes, this is a VERY tough one. Don't be afraid to have a go, though - I'm waiting for YOUR entry.
