Knightmare RPG

Post by Mystara »

Many years ago, the legendary Adam Battersby ran the Knightmare RPG in Knightmare chat on a Sunday evening.

A couple of people asked if we could do a re-run in Knightmare chat and this weekend I finished a first prototype, which was kindly playtested by Robin and the_mart....who sadly Akash'd.

Two players take on the dungeon at a time, and are separated from other chat participants. But through the magic of chat technology, the players' every move is relayed back into Knightmare chat. Visitors to Knightmare chat can therefore sit and scream at the players all day long (they won't hear), just like in the TV show :)

Here's how the game went. Note that the people with square brackets around their name [Like this] can only hear things said by others with square brackets around their names. [the_mart] and [Robin] were therefore unable to hear what Mystara, Pickles, Jennifer, and Dessimator were saying. I've made the 'gameplay' text that Robin and the_mart could see bold, just so that it stands out here in the forum.

[21:00:07] <[Treguard]> Time turns, the fire burns, time out is gone, the quest is ON!
[21:00:19] <[Robin]> Where are we?

[21:00:34] <Pickles> you are in a room
[21:00:56] <[Treguard]> You enter a narrow pathway, with steep drops either side. The pathway extends in the shape of a 'T' junction, leading off to a left exit and a right exit.
[21:01:38] <[Robin]> let's take the right path?

[21:01:41] <Pickles> i pick right
[21:01:51] <[the_mart]> I agree.
[21:01:59] <Pickles> yeah
[21:02:01] <[Robin]> ok we take the right hand path
[21:02:07] <[the_mart]> The left path can't be right, right?

[21:02:11] <Jennifer> Right
[21:02:20] <[Treguard]> You walk forward to the centre of the 'T' junction.
[21:02:20] <[[Treguard]]> You walk forward to the centre of the 'T' junction.
[21:02:31] <[Robin]> not normally anyhow

[21:02:41] <Pickles> i say right
[21:02:46] <[Treguard]> As you reach the centre, a cup appears above the doorway of the right exit, and a sword appears above the doorway of the left exit.
[21:03:08] <[Robin]> oh no we're doomed if we're on a quest for the cup

[21:03:11] <~Mystara> :D
[21:03:21] <[Robin]> but bravery must persist, still right for me
[21:03:22] <[the_mart]> True. Let's go left.
[21:03:27] <[the_mart]> Hmm...
[21:03:44] <[Robin]> cos that could be a nasty shimmery sword

[21:03:54] <Pickles> we picked cup. we must be brave.
[21:03:56] <[Robin]> and not the cup that heals
[21:04:05] <[the_mart]> Ok. We'll stick with the cup.
[21:04:16] <[Robin]> ok, we proceed right please
[21:04:50] <[Treguard]> You walk off to the right, exiting under the doorway with the cup above it.
[21:05:45] <[the_mart]> Can we whisper quietly so that we can hear, but the viewers can't?

[21:06:05] <Jennifer> Where's the fun in that?
[21:06:08] <~Mystara> Indeed
[21:06:12] <Jennifer> The Watchers want to Watch
[21:06:17] <[Robin]> let's continue
[21:06:22] <Jennifer> That sounded creepier than I intended
[21:07:14] <[Treguard]> Good. Then you enter a large square chamber. It looks much like an old barn. On the centre is a square table containing a number of different items. At the back of the room, a series of spikes fire up from the floor, before descending again with a loud clicking sound.
[21:07:38] <[Robin]> ok let's head for the table
[21:07:40] <[Treguard]> A single exit is at the back of the room, beyond the spikes.
[21:07:58] <[the_mart]> Let's examine the objects.
[21:08:04] <[Robin]> agreed
[21:08:41] <[Treguard]> Okay, on the table is a baguette, a scroll, a bar of silver, a box of matches, and a mug
[21:08:57] <[Robin]> do we have a knapsack?

[21:09:00] <Jennifer> Use the matches to set fire to the scroll?
[21:09:00] <[the_mart]> Let's eat the food.
[21:09:56] <[Treguard]> You place the baguette in the knapsack, which of course you have.
[21:10:05] <[Robin]> groovy
[21:10:10] <[the_mart]> Let's read the scroll.
[21:10:13] <[Robin]> yep
[21:10:20] <[Treguard]> As you finish placing the food in the knapsack, a face emerges from the back wall....!
[21:10:35] <[the_mart]> Uh-oh!

[21:10:36] <Jennifer> Use the matches to set fire to the face
[21:10:39] [WallMonster] (username@hostname) joined the channel
[21:10:55] <[WallMonster]> Stand and face me, dungeoneer!
[21:10:58] <[Robin]> as it's not just a book, I'm no good with Face books
[21:11:13] <[Robin]> we should turn around to face the monster

[21:11:14] <Pickles> you have to solve riddles..........cool
[21:11:35] <[the_mart]> Seems like good manners to do so.
[21:12:09] <[WallMonster]> I am nameless. For I am a wall. Three questions will I ask you. Get one correct and I eat you. Get two correct and live. Get three correct and I am yours to command.
[21:12:38] <[Robin]> ask away, your lack of name is not amusing
[21:13:28] <[WallMonster]> Question the first: When the number 4 is multiplied by its reciprocal, what is the product?

[21:13:35] <Jennifer> 1
[21:13:47] <Jennifer> True of any number, surely?
[21:13:52] <~Mystara> Indeed
[21:14:04] <[WallMonster]> An answer! Now!
[21:14:17] <Pickles> what's a reciprocal
[21:14:35] <[WallMonster]> 1 was the answer I sought.
[21:14:44] <Jennifer> They failed
[21:14:48] <[Robin]> woah that was quick
[21:14:50] <Jennifer> Are they going to get eaten? :)
[21:15:04] <[Robin]> I was just about to explain my theory to the mart
[21:15:08] <[WallMonster]> Question the second: Colorado is nicknamed The Centennial State because it joined the Union in what year?

[21:15:16] <Jennifer> The Centenary?
[21:15:30] <Jennifer> 1876 or 1976 then? :)
[21:15:53] <[the_mart]> Any ideas Robin? I'm no good with history. :-/
[21:15:58] <[Treguard]> Hurry team....!
[21:16:14] <[Robin]> 1876
[21:16:29] <[WallMonster]> Truth accepted.

[21:16:41] <Jennifer> Ah yes, enough time to hastily Google
[21:16:45] <[Robin]> phew
[21:16:47] <Pickles> yeah they got it right
[21:16:55] <[the_mart]> That was good!
[21:17:11] <[WallMonster]> Question the third: What is the largest native carnivore in England?

[21:17:36] <Jennifer> Interesting
[21:17:43] <[the_mart]> Do we have many native carnivores here?
[21:17:48] <[Robin]> I'm thinking fox but is that too obvious?

[21:17:53] <Jennifer> There are some wild wolves in Scotland, aren't there>
[21:17:57] <[the_mart]> Humans are bigger than foxes.
[21:18:06] <Jennifer> HUmans aren't carnivores
[21:18:08] <[WallMonster]> Answer me!
[21:18:13] <[Robin]> we're not native to just here tho
[21:18:16] <[Robin]> ok, Fox
[21:18:40] <[WallMonster]> Falsehood. Badger was the answer I sought.
[21:18:54] <[WallMonster]> And now....I FEED!

[21:18:54] <Jennifer> Surely wolves are bigger than badgers?
[21:18:58] <[the_mart]> Quick, cast a spell or summat!
[21:19:07] <~Mystara> Not carnivores, I think
[21:19:25] <[Robin]> better one of us should live!
[21:19:30] <[Treguard]> Oooooooooh, nasty.

[21:19:42] <Jennifer> You get some big breeds of dog
[21:19:46] <Pickles> ouch............
[21:19:55] <[Robin]> so am I still here or did it eat me too?
[21:19:55] <~Mystara> Dogs aren't carnivores, they're omnivorous
[21:20:02] <Jennifer> Ah, true
[21:20:08] <[the_mart]> It ate the dungeoneer.
[21:20:14] <[Robin]> ahhh

[21:20:18] <Jennifer> Wildcats?
[21:20:21] <[Treguard]> D-I-S-M-I-S-S

The ultimate goal is for anyone to be able to add rooms to the dungeon and/or run the event.
The RPG may return next week, if I can be bothered.

I'm sure he'll do better whenever we see him next. As Robin pointed out there was little guidance as to time limits :)

[15th anniversary post]

I've caught only one session of the RPG so far but I enjoyed it. It was fun to be a watcher again and also to discuss the quest afterwards (what could/should have happened), not unlike our discussions of the TV series.

'RPG', though, seems as much of a misnomer as it was originally. I wonder if there's a better name for it. Knightmare Text Adventure is perhaps a bit too functional.
