Pickle: I had a similar idea about the Dungeoneer being made blind under certain circumstances. I thought about so-called 'Blind Spots' in the Dungeon where the Dungeoneer would lose sight.
Additionally, occasions could arise (such as in the Final Conflict) where the Big Baddie could stop the Dungeoneer from hearing what Treguard and the team were saying, resulting in the Dungeoneer having to go it alone, with the people in the ante-chamber only able to watch and do nothing.

Hmmm, I dunno about that second idea. You see, dungeoneers, we have noticed, tend mostly to be dim, while the advisors guide them 'round the dungeon! Only Barry could've dealt with what to say without help from his advisors...
...but then again, he could've done the quest on his own... "Right, I'm going down a corridor, and I'm turning left..." ;D
