Ticker

Post by Malefact »

How about a ticker at the top of the front page of km.com for the latest news? A brief caption could be inserted to scroll along. I imagine it takes a bit of time to update the entire front page, so having a ticker to display the latest developments would be a useful stop-gap.

The BBC News website front page has a ticker that I imagine serves the same purpose.

P.S.: You could always bring back the torches and have one either side of the ticker bar. :)

Great Idea...

It may take some time to program the actual thing to work but it sounds none the less a good idea.

Contact Illusion he might be of some service...

It depends what language you're writing it in  ;D

Javascript - Takes longer to write/not as dynamic but can be used on any server...

PHP - Very quick to write and include, requires a server with PHP support... (Regarding this, if you decide on the ticker give me a holler and ill get it done, if needs be  :D )

Hehe, well failing an animated ticker, a banner could be just as effective.

Do they cost anything? If so it is probably out of the question. It might also make the page slower to load especially for people on dial up.

Well, an animated ticker wouldn't be very big at all, I'd imagine and I guess that one could be programmed fairly easily. A static banner would be even less of a problem - it'd just be an extra box to load up.

Thanks for the suggestion. I've never really liked tickers myself since you'd have to wait a while for all the news to scroll across. Having said that, it may be of use when there is some important knews which needs to be displayed quickly, before the pages are updated.

I will look into this.

Your welcome. It just occurred to me as something that would take the urgency off having to a big update as soon as major news breaks.

As I say, an alternative to a ticker would be a static banner at the top.

This is only true when using Javascript or images...

PHP wise, you know as well as i do that a .txt file is tiny and takes miliseconds to load over a 56K, making it a better option if your server supports it...
