I think four million's about right actually. It did peak at six million at one stage but I think that was around '91-'92 when the series became more famous.

If only 6 million were watching it on Challenge now. There might be a quicker answer as to whether KMVR gets commissioned.

Well, I'd guess that Km is still doing pretty well on Challenge, otherwise they wouldn't have bought every series and be showing them in a prime-time slot.

4/5 million was the figure normally mentioned at the time (in the Knightmare Adventurers Club magazine etc). I think it dropped off slightly towards the latter years (that's what ITV told me at the time) but there was a general decline in children's TV audiences on terrestrial TV due to competition from satellite/cable.
Indeed, the most popular CITV/CBBC shows nowadays only get about 2 million viewers.
