Series 5 (1990). Smirkenorff the Dragon's first flight.

Smirkenorff the Dragon

By Keith McDonald

Knightmare's legendary dragon, Smirkenorff, helped dungeoneers in their quest, usually by flying them to the next level.

Smirkenorff was a memorable addition to Knightmare's cast. It was an elaborate puppet made and operated by Talismen.

The dragon added a strong fantasy arc and greater dimension to the dungeon.

Finding his voice

In his first series, Smirkenorff was a silent character. He was often found at the beginning of the quest and would fly dungeoneers to a settlement such as Wolfenden.

Smirkenorff adopted a voice for his remaining years.

He might ask dungeoneers for a fare or comment on an element of storyline, such as his caution at the Brollachan. He might also commentate on the various journeys or provide information about the surroundings.

In Series 7, Smirkenorff became repetitive. Every route was from Level 1 to the Rift of Angar. It was normally in exchange for a firestone or at Romahna's favour.

Good-natured dragon

Smirkenorff was a mild-mannered dragon. His keepers are very protective of him.

The dragon relied on Elita for feeding and support during Series 5 and 6, and Romahna the Dragon Warden in Series 7.

Lord Fear realises an opportunity here. Before he unleashes his red dragon in Series 6, he has Elita captured so a weakened Smirkenorff cannot battle it.

The following year, Raptor tortures Romahna to open the gate so Smirkenorff is open to attack from the dragon-slaying Brollachan. We get a small taste of Smirkenorff's fire-power when he 'singes' Raptor.

After the departure of his keepers, Smirkenorff retires to a cave in Series 8. He was often found sleeping or grumbling at being disturbed by Motley.
