Brother Strange, a proverbial monk. Played by Cliff Barry.

Brother Strange

By Keith McDonald

Brother Strange was a mysterious travelling friar. He exchanged information and folklore for new proverbs to add to his collection.

Brother Strange followed Cedric and Brother Mace in Knightmare's clerical cast.

As his name suggests, Brother Strange was an enigmatic character. He wore a monk's habit with the hood up to hide his face.

He was often seen in unusually dangerous or murky places, including dwarf or snapdragon tunnels and the Corridor of Blades.

Knightmare Series 7 Team 6. Julie meets Brother Strange in a Level 1 dwarf tunnel.

Eccentric exchanges

Brother Strange collected proverbs for a very large book (almost 8,500 pages long).

Dungeoneers needed to offer several common proverbs or something more unusual before they found something he didn't know.

In return, he might offer a spyglass or useful information about characters or rune combinations. His most unusual fact was a Norse legend that told a team to search for a troll hammer.

In Series 8, Brother Strange is more eccentric and animated. He might offer more practical help, such as opening a trapdoor to Level 2.

Mystery to the Opposition

In Series 8, Lord Fear takes an interest in the mysterious monk, sensing an opportunity to hoodwink dungeoneers.

He quizzes Sylvester Hands, who describes Brother Strange as 'an odd fella' who collects 'pooms'.

Realising that Hands would never convince as someone knowledgeable, Fear impersonates the monk himself. But he pitches the role overfriendly, which alerts the team that he might not be genuine.
