    In the early series, there seems to have been a definitive, specific, laid out path. An item was used in a particular location and if you didn't have the item (for whatever reason) when it was needed then you died. The problem is that this lead to the situation where you can do badly in the clue room and still get through the dungeon by being lucky with your selection of items. On the other hand, if you did well, picked up exactly the right items, but missed a clue (or didn't understand the advice given) you were certainly dead. So bad teams could progress and good teams could fail, and it wasn't necessarily clear why. Later series seem to have eased up on this and there always seems to have been an alternative approach available for taking the wrong items (at least in level 1).

    Could someone please help? I'd really like to see the extended version. You can now watch the original upload of the extended Geek Week episode here. There's also a later upload here. Let us know what you think of it. Something I've only just noticed: the first thing to happen in the episode is a facing-away-from-the-camera sidestep (by Veruca). Surely deliberate? Thank you! Great to see the extra stuff! Also nice to hear the opening theme tune fade out naturally without the door-creaking-open sound effect at the end.

    Hugo has been known to make a few cameo appearances at Knightmare Live performances - both he and Mark Knight featured at the Leicester Square Theatre performance in November last year.

    I wonder if the Lords Of The Game pilot will forever remain a convention exclusive or if there might still be any future opportunity to see it. (And the pilot eps of Knightmare, for that matter. Would be cool if Tim could dig them out for the 40th anniversary next year!) I fear it’s unlikely. The pilot was filmed as “not for broadcast” so I imagine that legally it cannot be distributed. We did ask if we could include it on the DVD but although he gave it serious consideration, Tim said nay. I fear the pilots may have the same status

    Not sure if you mean the original TV series that started in 1987 and lasted regrettably only 6 or 7 years thereafter or the entire franchise as a whole. I'd like to think it applies to all things Knightmare and Tim Child's idea and production to make it a reality that continues to this day. It's such a shame the series not only didn't survive beyond the early / mid 1990's and that a DVD collection release never seemed obtainable. We've had spin offs and online parodies that while fun and offer a certain intrigue, just can't match the enthralment or experience of the original series. Maybe it's down to age perspective as things just aren't the same as you remember them but for what's it worth I take the opportunity to offer and provide all things Knightmare a sincere anniversary mention. Surely there's an event planned for next year to mark the 40 year turning. Hugo Myatt and all surviving cast members hopefully get together and provide something like a fan access day. It sounds plausible but not sure how far they'll actually get with it.

    I was at Warwick Castle last month. No sign of Fidjit at the entrance. Ha, that does look very similar! (Fidjit was at Simancas Castle, though.)

    Having noted the many similarities between Lord Fear and Sauron, it occurred to me recently that his Series 8 incantations might be intended to resemble Black Speech, which has the same kind of harsh sounds (and includes "ash" among the few words Tolkien invented). Interestingly we see this again in Lords Of The Game where Lord Fear's name is Veerash - very Orkish-sounding! (His middle name less so, haha.)

    My Knightmare Dream

    Hi it's me again. I'm back with more Knightmare dreams ^^ A few nights ago, I had a dream that four kids were playing an online video game together, sort of a Knightmare co-op game. When suddenly, they were all sucked into their computers and reappeared in the Knightmare dungeons. Rather than appearing in Treguard's castle, they all appeared underneath the Tower of Goth. One of the kids tried to take a piece of food, but Lord Fear appeared and chased all the kids away. So the aim of the game was for the kids to make their way backwards and get back to Knightmare Castle, but anything and anyone could kill them along the way. I think it worked like the Spanish version of the show, i.e. if one child made it back, the whole team would win. Which is just as well because all the kids started dying to traps a little too quickly. An interesting concept though for Knightmare, starting from the end and making your way backwards.

    It seems to me that someone who's well-read would allude to those archetypes intuitively, if not intentionally, due to their prevalence in literature.

    I didn't realise Anthony Donovan (Grimaldine/Brollachan) is no longer with us? I've just seen a Doctor Who wiki that says he died back in 2016, citing this Equity annual report: https://www.equity.org.uk/media/n2tjqmio/equity-annual-report-2016.pdf#page=115 (Weirdly that was the same year I posted a song parody about Grimaldine's funeral!)

    Knightmare at BFI Mediatheque

    Several episodes of Knightmare are available to view at London's BFI Mediatheque (a free audio-visual repository of old film and TV at the BFI Southbank location). These are often from the original broadcast on CiTV. These span many years of Knightmare's history; some episodes also include the CiTV wraparound host sections in addition to the episode itself. From my viewing, it seems that episodes available to view include the first ever from Series 1 and one from each subsequent series. There are no successive episodes, however, meaning that some quests are only partially shown. One winner is shown - Julie, from Series 7. We've all seen Knightmare episodes by now, but I was quite excited to see these presented in their original broadcast form! If you're ever near the Southbank I'd recommend availing yourself of free Knightmare! Knightmare's entry on the BFI archive search is here. Information about the Mediatheque itself is here.     "Dickon's got the horn, master!" seems to be very famous for something that never ended up in the finished episode, too (it originates from a 2002 David Learner interview and presumably got cut before transmission). I wonder if David Learner himself has slightly misremembered this incident. He claims to have said it when they picked up the goblin-deafening horn in the Oakley scene, but this has always struck me as rather unlikely (it's not like Pickle was in the habit of redundantly observing what clue objects had just been chosen), and I also doubt he would have said it when they needed to use the horn, as it would've been too heavy a hint. Perhaps he actually said it when they completed their quest - Pickle does exclaim "He's done it, master - Dickon has the crown!" and a goblin horn sounds as he picks it up, which is weirdly never mentioned by anyone. This might have caused David to accidentally say "horn" instead of "crown", which would be easy enough to re-film. (It's possible there was supposed to be some additional dialogue about rescuing Dickon before the goblins arrived, which ended up being forgotten or cut.)

    You see '37 years ago' and it halts you in your tracks. It's wild that can be possible. Thinking back to those times; seeing the community that still survives all this time later, and learning that all those special memories of care-free childhood, glued to the TV watching the latest Dungeoneer taking on the dungeon; and you realise all those memories aren't just your own. Many, many others up and down the country have the same memories. Cheers to Knightmare; to Tim, Hugo and indeed every single person involved in the show, in front of and behind the camera. I said to Hugo today when I met him at Fan X Live that Knightmare is one of a kind. There was nothing else like it at the time, and there's been nothing quite like it since, either.

    Oooh Nasty is a great phrase to start them with!! Temporal Disruption would be another great one for when it's bedtime!! As for being too young, yes I can see Knightmare being a bit much for a 2 and a half year old, although I was still 5 when I watched episode 1 (It aired a week before my 6th Birthday) and some it was scary, but I guess it was supposed to be! So maybe wait another yaer of two before setting her on "The Path"

    Hey all. I am new to KNIGHTMARE and as my first post I wanted to do something fun. If there was words to the theme music (Series 1) what might it be? Also, how would you put the theme song into words like describe how would it be? If that makes sense. Thanks!

    Apart from the nitpicking I was doing occasionally, particularly with the info around the earlier series he was describing - who was good, who was bad, what room was started in what series etc, I thought it was a good condensed way to introduce people to the series. I have recently been on a Knightmare binge watching the old series again so the info was a bit more fresh in the memory bank.

    I was a huge fan of GamesMaster, especially the earlier series and have quite a few episodes on VHS. A comprehensive, tangible history would indeed be a fantastic thing to have. Several excellent points have been made however, as to why this would seem unlikely. Cost is one thing and time is another. As much as we all adore Knightmare, sometimes a show has simply just "had it's time" despite how good or even groundbreaking and influential it was. Sadly, Knightmare hasn't become a 'Mr. Men', 'Thunderbirds', 'Sooty' or 'Thomas The Tank Engine' which keep being repeated and even today have new episodes in regular production. Even GamesMaster has been revived and rebooted a time or two. While Knightmare has been repeated on a couple of channels over the years, and has plenty of clips on the ITV Children's Classics youtube channel, it has received next to no mainstream support. There was a great amount of buzz surrounding the showing of two episodes as part of CITV'S 'Old Skool Weekend', the 'Geek Week' episode and of course the convention, but this was all a decade ago and very little has happened since. Series 4 appearing on BritBox Was also wonderful, but that too seems to have been rather quickly forgotten about. I say all that to say while Knightmare does indeed have many old fans, who I'm sure would want to buy the book and perhaps even support it's production without it being readily available (Officially at least) it might be more expensive than it's worth if Knightmare isn't creating/getting any new fans or isn't anything more than a faint, if pleasant memory. Though I don't wish to appear negative, so it would be an amazing project, and with next year being the 30th anniversary of the final "Time Out" who knows what could happen.
