In the early series, there seems to have been a definitive, specific, laid out path. An item was used in a particular location and if you didn't have the item (for whatever reason) when it was needed then you died. The problem is that this lead to the situation where you can do badly in the clue room and still get through the dungeon by being lucky with your selection of items. On the other hand, if you did well, picked up exactly the right items, but missed a clue (or didn't understand the advice given) you were certainly dead. So bad teams could progress and good teams could fail, and it wasn't necessarily clear why. Later series seem to have eased up on this and there always seems to have been an alternative approach available for taking the wrong items (at least in level 1).

Could someone please help? I'd really like to see the extended version. You can now watch the original upload of the extended Geek Week episode here. There's also a later upload here. Let us know what you think of it. Something I've only just noticed: the first thing to happen in the episode is a facing-away-from-the-camera sidestep (by Veruca). Surely deliberate? Thank you! Great to see the extra stuff! Also nice to hear the opening theme tune fade out naturally without the door-creaking-open sound effect at the end.

I wonder if the Lords Of The Game pilot will forever remain a convention exclusive or if there might still be any future opportunity to see it. (And the pilot eps of Knightmare, for that matter. Would be cool if Tim could dig them out for the 40th anniversary next year!) I fear it’s unlikely. The pilot was filmed as “not for broadcast” so I imagine that legally it cannot be distributed. We did ask if we could include it on the DVD but although he gave it serious consideration, Tim said nay. I fear the pilots may have the same status

I love how the boys from St Helens don't look remotely like their 2023 counterparts I see on the bus occasionally! Great find.

I also came here to say Series 6. Even though a few elements that I love about older Knightmare are lost by Series 6, I do think the series as a whole has become slick and interesting by this point. The episodes are faster-paced, the quests contain longer running "plots" that continue through numerous rooms, and the introduction of the atmospheric/tension music really helps to kill the "boring" feel of some of the earlier episodes. Some of those early episodes are so still and quiet, that when a dungeoneer is being slow it's painstaking. With the introduction of the sinister music it really helps to make the adventure feel more exciting. I think for a modern 2023 person who'd never seen the show before, they'd really struggle getting through more than a couple of episodes of Series 1. However, if you could make them fall in love with the "higher production value" of Series 6 then they'd be more likely to want to go back and see how it all began.

How dark! And as the OP said, a little inconsistent with what we're told/shown happens to dungeoneers. But not REALLY because it can simply be explained away as a different reality.

In general that's probably true, but I wouldn't say so with Lillith; the path still went through the Serpent's Mouth Cavern in season 3, but Lillith had gone. Oh true she was a bad example haha. Maybe she was in the toilet.

According to a comment I saw on social media, Tim Child was once interviewed for White Dwarf, the Games Workshop magazine. The interviewer was Tim Pollard (who also contributed illustrations to White Dwarf); the issue is unknown but I'm guessing it was between 1987 and 1994 i.e. when Knightmare was originally on. I can't recall this interview being mentioned elsewhere. There doesn't seem to be a complete online archive of White Dwarf magazine scans from the relevant period. If any of you have a collection of back issues, or just a memory of Tim's interview that might help in tracking it down, it would be great to know more about it.

I'm visiting Norwich next year in May, and i was wondering if there were any locations worth visiting for Knightmare-related events, like can you find the prop helmet anyone to see or general filming locations, or even merchandise if its possible. It's a bit of a loose thought, but I rather make the most of it whilst I'm there if anyone has any suggestions. Aside from the TV studio, the only filming location in Norwich itself is Dragon Hall (the interior of the Crazed Heifer pub and other scenes), which is open for guided tours on the third Monday of each month: http://nationalcentreforwriting.org.uk/dragon-hall/tours/ There are other places you can visit in Norfolk and Suffolk if you're able to take a day trip: http://tinyurl.com/KMlocations

Has anyone seen any photos of Hugo Myatt from before he was in Knightmare? The oldest pic I can find is from a 1976 panto programme, when he played "Spite, the Devil’s Henchman" in Jack and the Beanstalk at the Grand Theatre in Leeds: https://comedykings.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2010/10/76prog8.jpg Just trying to picture what Treguard might have looked like in his younger days, as described in the first novella!

Tis indeed. Began watching again last night, but this time, starting from Season 5. Every September when I begin watching episodes, life gets busy, and I usually tail off around Season 4. So to combat that, I am starting on a later season for 2022. The problem with this time of year also, is I begin counting down to Christmas super early. 1st September is when it all begins for me. To that I begin watching shows which remind me of Christmas, and those would be primarily shows which have a Christmas Special. It's too early to watch the actual Christmas Special episodes, so the regular seasons of Father Ted, The Office, The Royle Family, BlackAdder and others will suffice up until November. Add to the above, that I also begin watching episodes of Gamesmaster at this time too, for the exact same reasons I would rewatch Knightmare at this time of year too. September 1st to December 25th is easily my favourite time of year.

A good topic for us watchers to think about. I can easily say when I think it's most pronounced - in Series 7, when Treguard frets and dotes like never before - but pinpointing when the transformation starts is less obvious. While Treguard's overall brilliance is down to Hugo Myatt's performance, the degree of help he gives teams owes more to an earpiece and Tim Child. For the purposes of fun speculation, I'm going to discount that and assume conscious decision making on the part of Treguard. At the end of Series 2 Quest 5, after dungeoneer Tony has met a chilling fate in Mogdred's playpen, we get a sardonic but hilarious reaction from the Dungeon Master: "Never mind. I suppose even Mogdred's got to have some fun." As PookasRule/Nathan says, strictly neutral and sometimes even antagonistic. During Series 2 Quest 6 (dungeoneer Akash), Treguard's familiar glee at a struggling team reaches its crescendo: he breaks the fourth wall mid-quest to comment on a "team [that] seems to hunt for trouble". But it's not long before Lillith ends the adventure and Treguard sympathetically says, "Poor old Akash!" Two quests on from a victory, Treguard has seen how the dungeon shows no mercy to a poor team and maybe, just maybe, he decides that he should be more supportive of teams under threat... ...Because one quest later we get the "Letter O" incident, where Treguard breaks through Mogdred's constraining magic to give increasing, essential help to a team who, on the face of it, have shown a lack of basic competence by repeatedly omitting one letter from the dispelling of a six-letter spell. (I say 'on the face of it' because I'm come to believe that the scene was staged and that the team weren't as careless as it appears.) In Series 3, Treguard still shows himself not to be on teams' side at times... Not only did Treguard say "We're celebrating an unbroken record" at the start, but he recounted the 10-0 score with a big grin on his face- who's side is HE on, then? ...But there are also times where his allegiance is very much with the team against any threat: "No!! Don't!!" he cries when Mogdred tells Leo (Series 3 Quest 4) to take off the Helmet of Justice. In Series 4, it becomes harder for Treguard to be impartial because he has a partisan assistant with him throughout every quest. I don't know when Treguard last laughs at a team's demise but it may well be Simon sidestepping to his left in Quest 4. In Series 5, the Opposition renews itself with the arrival of Lord Fear and builds itself into an organised force, making neutrality less justifiable. Series 5 Quest 4 has a jarring moment of sympathy where Treguard checks that the team has "got the magnifying glass", echoing their own misnaming of a spyglass. Series 6 Quest 4 is when I think there is no way back to neutrality for Treguard. Ben's team, perhaps the most helped winning team in all of Knightmare, get a massive twofold hint for a puzzle on Level 3, when teams really should be fending for themselves: Treguard's advice that the team should consider not simply Lord Fear, nor simply Lord Fear's sense of humour, but Lord Fear's "so-called sense of humour", made the TRICK or TREAT riddle a lot easier to solve. (If only Team 1 of Series 4 had received help like that with their TRANSFORMATION and BUT predicament.) By Series 7 Quest 2 (dungeoneer Nicola), the former Dungeon Master is gone and Uncle Treguard is here to stay, fretting and doting and referring to "we", making himself an extension of the team: "W-what we need is the Nightsight, where's the Night- ... aw, they haven't got the Nightsight." And his "Ooh nasty" for that team, side by side with Majida, is so compassionate that I'm surprised he didn't offer the advisors a box of tissues. The way he talks to (or in front of) Series 7 Team 7 (Barry) - a team that need no help - during Play Your Cards Right is a very, very, very long way from Series 2 Treguard. I was tempted to call it peak Uncle Treguard but it's more than that: it's Grandpa Treguard. I don't find it easy to listen to at all. "Yes ... you've gotta get across the gap. Get, get right to the edge." "One two three four, it's the it's the Eight. One two three four, yes it must be. The Eight of Hearts." It's not a character journey I enjoy but as PookaRules says, it's evolution. I have to remind myself that Tim and Hugo didn't go down the pub one day and plot to destroy Treguard: the character adapted to a changing realm.

That's really heartening, you could hopefully say similar for the likes of 'stepping boldly forward' and 'choosing wisely'. Interestingly, depression was used in a somewhat skewed sense of humour in the series with first a little more success for the gargoyle and later to excess with the weeping doors trilogy of Doorkis, Dooris & Dooreen and I don't just mean with the instruction to "Open up and let us through!"

There was a Knightmare question in the final round of Paul Sinha's TV Showdown on Saturday! Something about which programme featured the dungeon master Treguard (I didn't catch the exact wording). I'm pleased to report that Jon Richardson got it right. It's repeated on Wednesday at 11:40pm (ITV) if anyone wants to watch.

For me, the opposite happened to "jumping the shark", although I'm aware that I'm stretching the definition a bit. Knightmare started out as a dark, dingy, claustophobic experience which I absolutely loved precisely because it was frightening. I still love the earlier seasons for thatnow. By season 8 it had been watered down. I don't want to sound ungrateful because any Knightmare is good Knightmare, but for me personally, season 8 felt a bit... "That big scary skull Life Force sprite was too much for little children. So was the walking skeleton-knight. Let's show you a nice pie to track your Life Force, because when it runs out, you're hungry. You see?" Being able to put clue objects in the bag just muddied the waters for me. Does anyone remember that part in series 5 or 6 when Hordriss, disguised as Harris the Beggar, put a book in the dungeoneer's knapsack and had to reassure them that it wouldn't be digested? That's a nice little mechanic that the Knightmare team created out of almost nothing. How many times have* you* felt anxious about someone putting certain objects in a bag? I admit that my first reaction was "Let's let the little darlings put things in the bag so they don't have to hold them" but in truth it was probably more to do with letting the dungeoneer keep their hands free to use Reach Snapper-jack as a character came off as patronising, much like the Life Force pie. Thing is, his voice and tone and general weirdness could have made him a fantastic character! So I think it's such a shame they did the hand-puppet thing, and that if they just removed that then they'd have had some extremely unsettling for dungeoneers to deal with Special mention for that one scene where Brother Strange uses magic to open the trap-door to level 2. I forget his exact words but it's something along the lines of "this is a very dangerous moment. You must keep very still" before he stalks around the door, knocks it with his staff, and it opens. It just fell so flat to me. How could this possibly feel dangerous? Compare that with "Harris" putting the book in the knapsack where it was fairly clear what the potential danger was. Perhaps if they'd introduced a mechanic where something dangerous might be lurking on the opposite side of that trap-door that the dungeoneer had to get rid of without encountering it direclty then it could have worked brilliantly. It felt like there was just too much CGI. Yet, even this I think is forgiveable because one of Lord Fear's main strengths was his willingness to innovate. This too could have been utilised better. We as viewers were expected to ignore the obvious CGI, but what if there'd been some cover-story that Lord Fear had extended his influence even into Level 1 so that it looked like his territory but his magic there was weak? That could be explored so much, but what could Lord Fear have done under those circumstances? Generally unnerved the dungeoneer? Created the illusion of monsters where really there were none? Nettled clue room guardians into asking harder questions? Like I say, I don't want to come across as ungrateful for any Knightmare show. I just think the above could have been better used.

I've got three of the four CYOA books and am now seriously thinking I should order the fourth one. Money's something of a thin resource for me just at the moment but this shouldn't be to much of a cost once I've got a couple of clients in. I think I'll buy the remaining book as a reward to myself when I get those. But yes, the Sorcerer's Isle was a fantastic story. Well, all of them were, but I especially remember TSI for two things: firstly, the beautiful description of... now I'm wondering where it was, but there was something about a "light and fragrant breeze" at the beginning which makes it sound like Treguard was living somewhere warm and balmy. I'm sure it was this book, though. I've since used similar descriptions when people have commissioned me to write stories. The other bit I particularly vividly remember of this book was how the leader of the Bedouin takes Treguard's sword. I honestly felt sick for Treguard being bound to hand it over. I always found it curious that we didn't hear anything about Rupert anywhere in the Knightmare TV series. That said, Lord Fear was probably a better option as he offered a mechanic with far more potential.
