I'm just a guy who loved the skulls FAR too much when watching the show. I always grinned evilly when one appeared onscreen, because they were just Badass...
Pooka's were okay, but the googly face just looked a little too...cute for a villainous apparition. Skulls were FAR more effective in that area.

Treguard said of some of them, like this one, that they were the ghosts of former dungeoneers. But he said he didn't know what the ones in the lower levels were. Perhaps the ghosts of the characters who'd been axed and didn't take it very well? Lilith: "What do you mean my presence isn't required for Series 3?" followed by rapid crumbling of all ledges anywhere in the dungeon. "Even the team who brought me an empty jar of humbugs didn't make me this mad!"
