Sounds like a lot of effort has gone into this. I'm looking forward to seeing this come to fruition.
  • A live interactive RPG show on US cable TV in 1982

No, this isn't April 1st. I've found evidence on YouTube that there was at least one episode of an honest-to-goodness live interactive RPG show on a US cable TV network as early as 1982. Calling it RPG might be a touch strong - it's really "choose your own adventure", but with off-brand fantasy tabletop RPG trimmings. It's fascinating, more for its potential than anything else. Prepare to scroll through 21 seconds of test card before you get to the content. With that warning in mind, I present to you 'QUBE Cincinnati - Swordquest', months before Atari would use the title for an unrelated, but coincidentally similarly doomed, series of adventure games for its 2600 console. The same YouTube channel has examples of other programming from a short-lived US cable TV network called QUBE which had simple live interactivity with its viewing audience through buttons on their remote controls. When the TC show prompts people to "touch now", it wasn't kidding. The cable network started in 1977, lost money hand over fist, and was shut down in the early '80s. Other interactive game shows on the channel made a virtue of featuring live polling data from as many as 168 families who were watching, despite having (in context) a big star at the time hosting. The quality of the show is better than you might expect in some places, and towards the lower end of your expectations in other places. I suspect the gameplay was pretty heavily railroaded, though slightly more subtly than you might expect. I don't think its existence is at all well known, even among people who are interested in adventure games on TV.

Thomas Baker Knight Jr. (a.k.a. Baker Knight) is perhaps best known for writing The Wonder of You. In 1956 he started a group called Baker Knight and The Knightmares. (This may be the earliest known use of the pun.) This is one of their songs: Hallucinations (1967).

I recently got this for my Kindle; - https://www.amazon.co.uk/KNIGHTMARE-Beverley-Cann-ebook/dp/B08TCGFZQP/ It's got nothing to do with any TV series you may be thinking about - although it is about someone from the modern world going back in time by mysterious means to the 12th Century and spending a lot of time in an English Castle in which people die frequently and in rather gruesome ways - but it is rather good....

The game Beyond a Steel Sky features a character called Pixel. He says that his name "rhymes with Pickle".

Thanks for the links, James. I'd like to think that Virtual Knightmare is an official name, but it may just be what The Crystal Maze Database has called this game. Al Murray's (successful) attempt at the game was particularly enjoyable, with excellent guiding by Ashley Taylor Dawson. It included an instruction for Al to sidestep to his left.

I couldn't find any mention of it in previous threads for this and sorry if duplicated anything not read but a few days ago watched Time Bandits for the first time. A very critically acclaimed film with names from the Monty Python team behind it but point being there were certain similarities with the Knightmare series. For one (spoilers alert) there's a spyglass effect with the main villain (with one of two adversaries) keeping watch on the heroes or team trying to prevail with a water effect in a pool. Reminded me of Lord Fear straight away. Secondly a ghostly head that appears speaking out and warning the team that was very similar to Mogdred in the earlier episodes. A knight on horseback appears at the near beginning in a woodland setting that also offered intrigue. It's obviously set in the past hence the film title with various surroundings taking place in bygone eras. I wondered if Tim Child or one of the producers took notice of the film and developed a concept on what I had watched. It was about six years before Knightmare actually started it's run on TV but wouldn't they have had to ask for the rights to go ahead with it or find consent from the makers of the film itself. I'll give it another watch when able but the more I sat through it the more I accepted there were clear similarities between the film and the series itself.

The Saturday Review section of today's Times has a photo of Mick Jagger and Keith Richards on the cover, with the caption 'Never too old'. It reminded me of the caption competition on Interactive Knightmare in 2004, where the prizewinning caption of a picture of Beveryafraid (a.k.a. Garstang, the orc/goblin from Knightmare VR) was 'Keith Richards was beginning to show his age'.

At one point in the film 2001: A Space Odyssey, the camera moves towards a black oblong standing in a room. A moment later, the camera pans down from a full moon, which of course is how most episodes of Knightmare Series 1-5 started.

The Spanish company Knightmare Games sells a variety of fantasy miniatures, including goblins. Among them are a Samurai Goblin and a Goblin Witch, which in Knightmare Series 6 would have constituted most bizarre lovechildren. http://knightmareminiatures.com/search?keyword=goblin

The new Hellboy film, out next month, will feature the character Gruagach. Unlike the mysterious evil being in the first Knightmare book, this Gruagach is referred to as an 'iconic pig-fairy villain'. There are some glimpses of it in the trailers. Merlin will also be a character in the film, played by Brian Gleeson who is a couple of months younger than Knightmare.

Eurythmics - Here Comes The Rain Again The very start makes me think of Series 5 and Smirkenorff flights. Paul Simon - You Can Call Me Al Elf portal at the back (once the door's open). Phil Collins - In The Air Tonight The corridor at 2:41 reminds me of the Series 3 dwarf tunnels. (Also, as a reference to another CITV series, in the lead-up to 3:15 try saying, "This is an art attack... this is an art attack... This is Art Attack!") *"If everything stops for time out, why don't I stop for time out?" "I'm working on it, madam. Believe me, I'm working on it!"* - Majida and Treguard, Series 8 "Just you shut your mouth" - David Bowie, China Girl [image: China-Girl-Knightmare.jpg] Puppy - Arabella As written about on Knightmare.com last year.

I know Freyja Westdal doesn't have as demanding a role as Hugo Myatt - she's not onscreen at all, so she can read most of her lines directly from a script - but I do think she's just as good at responding immediately in character when the team say something unexpected. David Learner is great at improvising too, but then we already knew that! The other characters are... not exactly of Knightmare standard. I can't understand why there is SO much scripted talking and SO little gameplay in this programme. It was tedious enough how Knightmare Series 1 had exactly the same intro and outro for every episode, and that was with an intro that took up less than 40 seconds and an outro of about 50 seconds. In The Satellite Game, the outro is just under 40 seconds - not too bad - but the intro takes more than THREE MINUTES each time, not including the recap of their earlier adventures! Why on earth didn't they cut it down a bit? And then Coco has to give these long, unnecessarily detailed speeches about everything, like whenever there's a Killerdroid and she spends the best part of a minute listing all of its weapon specifications, when all they actually need to know is that it's capable of destroying Lari. Then on the rare occasion that the team actually has to do something... it's pretty much impossible to figure out what they're supposed to do, thanks to the rubbish graphics and lack of useful information provided! The team that died in the latest uploads had absolutely no chance in that final game. It wasn't clear what anything in the room was supposed to be, what their actual task was, or how they could achieve it. They tried every apparent option, but kept being told they were wasting time - I certainly had no idea what they were doing wrong! They weren't given any kind of meaningful clue until they were just about to run out of time and get destroyed. A very harsh death if you ask me! (They had the same problem in most of the previous games, too - constantly having to ask what the various shapes in front of them are, and being nagged to repeat actions because they can't tell that they haven't done enough to complete a task.) Also, sometimes it's not clear if they were even meant to do anything at all - on several occasions they get screamed at to take action, but it seems probable that Lari was always going to get blown up so the team would have to control him for a while. (A bit like when Chris turns into a goblin - we'll never know if the team chose the wrong spell or if that outcome was intended and inevitable!) Not to mention the utterly pointless chase sequence at the start of the next quest, where they spend almost 2 minutes desperately trying to outrun a missile, only to find it wasn't a threat (or indeed anything relevant to their quest) after all...!! There are brief moments, like when Lari navigates the kitchen worktops and appliances, when I think I would have been quite enthralled if I'd seen this as a child. I also like it when they show different views of the same environment (e.g. using the mine scan to guide Lari safely through the minefield). Some good ideas, just buried underneath all the waffle and poor design! This is very similar to the Cyberzone viewing experience, except that Craig Charles gave that show a great deal more energy than this one has. The contestants on TSG look understandably bored out of their minds... If anyone missed it, Weaver's Week did a review of the first episode a couple of years ago: http://www.ukgameshows.com/ukgs/Weaver%27s_Week_2014-02-02#The_Satellite_Game

I went to this last night, it's the new(ish) live comedy project of Paul Flannery (aka Knightmare Live's Treguard). The show has three people randomly picked from the audience and each one is assigned a character - either a mage, thief or warrior. Each player comes up with their own character name, it can be something as simple as Bob or as bit more extravagant such as Ken Woodchef. The characters also choose what race they are be it for example human, elf or dwarf and then the fun begins. MMORPG is a lot more improvisation-based than Knightmare Live and generally involves outcomes being decided on the roll of a 20-sided dice and items based on suggestions directed to Paul in his role of gamesmaster. Without wanting to give too much else away, it was a lot of humourous fun and as I've said before, the show is a lot more spontaneous than Knightmare Live (although both shows are equally just as enjoyable) and I would definitely recommend it to everyone if you are into the Dungeons & Dragons style roleplaying element.
