It would have been interesting to have seen something happen to Mogdred (getting his cumuppance) at the end of series 4, such as a similar fate to Lord Fear or even Skarkill. Maybe there could have been something happened between him and Hordriss like a duel or Hordriss defeating Mogdred in some way or another or Hordriss just doing something really humilitating to Mogrdred.

Well, the answer to the original question, "Why did they never have a proper season finale in the early seasons?" is perfectly simple - it probably never occurred to anyone back then to try it.
In any case, these finales didn't make as big a difference as is being made out, because in the final analysis people were still being sent into the dungeon for a quest that they didn't have the time to complete. The finales that were dreamed up only papered over the cracks, as the last teams in seasons 5, 6 and 8 still had their adventures cut short before time. At least the finales gave the illusion of closure of course, but they were really designed only to draw attention away from the fact that the teams were being robbed of a fair chance of winning.
For my own part, the finales generally left me cold. I thought they were melodramatically over-acted, slightly silly, and even undermined the logic of the rest of the seasons. (If Lord Fear could send a troll crashing through the antechamber floor to destroy Knightmare Castle, why did he waste the previous fourteen episodes chasing dungeoneers around instead of just sending the troll in on day one?)

But I dissagree I don't think they rubished the logic of the rest of the game.
It was always stated that Lord Fear sent out Red Death Or Bulstrode Or arranged with Assandre to freeze the dungeon as a last desperet attempt or in anger (e.g. when Greystagg rejected his alliance in S6.)
I have a snecking supision Lord F enjoyed chaseing the dungeoners around the dungeon.

And I think he also enjoyed the battale of wits with Tregurad these attaks were just a part of that.

I'd go along with that, Skarky (...oops sorry, Skarkill,) except the problem is that it doesn't really fit the scenario. Why would Fear make a "last, desperate attempt" when he's already WON the season handsomely? For that matter, "A last attempt" implies that he made a previous attempt during that season. As I say above, he never did, and that in itself is hard to understand.

That's not what I meant. Fear didn't make any attack on Knightmare Castle until the final episode of each season. A desperate last attempt implies that it's a series of attacks in a running pattern all the way through each season. No such thing happened, instead the PTB were, if anything, attacking him.

I agree with that statement, several teams were well and truely robbed due to End of season and it really is a shame that in S8 they allowed that team to skip level 2 just so they could stand more chance of winning

Actually, I'm gonna break ranks on the Dunstan issue. I'm one of the ones who think his win was fair enough.
Most fans who criticise the final ever episode are assuming that a shorter quest automatically means an easier one. But missing out level two was a bit like going straight from your last year in primary school to your GCSE year, and it probably made it tougher for his team rather than easier as the learning curve was a lot steeper and harsher. I think we should give Dunstan the benefit of the doubt.
Whether he was hit on the blades corridor is another matter of course (he definitely WAS), but the idea of missing out level two isn't as much of a sell-out as all that.

never any real need for lord fear to send dragons and trolls he won the whole knightmare game anyway.
he said he would never give up and on avarange only one team per season won.. so in all Fear was the overall winner.
on the other hand the only quest object he still hold is the cup.. so many he did loose.
