I may be wrong but I believe he has worked on Dr Who in the past too, composing incidental music for Colin Baker's era (one or two stories), which is the year before KM started
I though One Foot in the Graves incidental suited the show well, as did Eric Idles super theme song

Only today did I learn that Ed Welch wrote not just the Blockbusters theme, but also the original Catchphrase theme. No wonder they picked him as Knightmare's composer.

Now that we mention it, I wish they would put some repeats on again of One foot in the grave, I used to really like that show, Richard Wilson was outstanding in that. Would Challenge put in on as part of their retro years, or would it be for gameshows only? Either way, I wish someone would show the series again.

I found a nice interview with Ed Welch from 2010. He doesn't mention Knightmare (not in what's quoted, anyway) but the whole piece is a welcome insight. While I wouldn't wish him to have a high profile online if he's doing well enough without one, I hope that one of us can make contact with him one day and convey our appreciation of his contribution to Knightmare. It's been remixed, used in rock songs, headbanged to in YouTube videos, danced to at weddings...
I'd like to think that he'd also enjoy the YouTube video in which his Blockbusters theme is seamlessly grafted onto the Knightmare intro.
I'm glad that when Catchphrase came back in 2013, it did so with a variation on Ed Welch's original theme, which in my view was one of the most exhilarating TV themes ever. In fact, there are some videos on YouTube that play the original theme over the new intro.

Ed Welch was on 'The Sound of ITV: The Nation's Favourite Theme Tunes' this evening, talking about the Blockbusters theme. They mentioned a few others he had written, but sadly not Knightmare! Cool to see him though.
The programme also featured the phrase "Dog's bottom" during an item about Downton Abbey.

It was disappointing not to hear Knightmare mentioned. Catchphrase, fair enough. But Crosswits? (Also difficult to understand was that they covered Ron Grainer without referring to Doctor Who - purely because it wasn't an ITV show?) Nevertheless, it was good to see Ed Welch getting the exposure and recognition, along with all the other composers and musicians.
