Obligatory Favourite Doctor Thread

I don't just have one favourite, but if I had to choose I would say the 4th Doctor (Tom Baker), he was Alien, Serious, Sinister, Funny, Eccentric and Crazy all rolled in to one. I loved Tom's peformance, but most importantly I loved the scarf
Colin Baker is second (see my Sixth Doctor Topic)
and Jon Pertwee is Third, what I loved about Jon was the way he played the role, whereas every other Doctor had their own funny little quirks and eccentricities he didn't. He was a more Authorative, Serious and at times Sexist Doctor, he was definetly I think the most Masculine of all Doctor's, he was all-action, loved driving fast-cars, had his fair share of beautiful Female Companions, was good at Fighting and practised Karate. Doctor Who was Jon Pertwee's Audition for James Bond.

Patrick Troughton & Sylevster McCoy for me.
Troughton IS the template for what most if not all of the following Doctors characters have been based on his "Cosmic Hobo" whimsical character was such a contrats to the sargent major, marionet First Doctor. He is one of the most engaging anf funny Doctors while also maintaing that air of mysetery about him. Also you did genuinaly belive he was in jepody when he was faced with a life or death situation unlike some of the later Dcotors Cough Number 4 Cough. This Doctor also cermented the Doctor as a genuin Hero who would always try to set thinsg right and fight evil when ever he could (Hartnell's had started to do this towards the end of his run but his Doctor hadn't always been this way inclined.) He also had a darker side to him as shown when he used Jamie puting his young freinds life in danger in The Evil Of The Daleks so as to deffeat the Daleks.
McCoy is (In my oppinion) the darkest of all the Doctors his 7th Doctor is legitamatly Sinister at times and dose make you feel as an audiance that you can't always fully trust him which is a nice turn around from the likes of Previous Doctors. His Machivelion style of manipulations of both foes, freinds and nutrales plus the sence that he is ALWAYS somehow one step ahead of the game is a reffreshing change as well when compared to Davisons Victim of Fate Number 5 or the Colin's ultra violent but lacking in direction number 6. Yet he also made mistakes and miscalculated like in Remmembrence of The Daleks or Ghost Light, so he wasn't Always perfect which was also good for the character.

My favourite Doctor, despite the limited screen-time, is the Eighth Doctor, Paul McGann.
I've always been fascinated by the Romantic era, studying it to death at university, and the Byronesque clothes worn by this Doctor (even though they were supposed to be Wild Bill Hickock's, a joke picked up on in the graphic novels) really seemed to shape his character. He's certainly the most whimsical of the Doctors, almost poetic, and yet his character manages to comprise so many other elements too. He's romantic in more than one sense (being the first Doctor to kiss anyone on-screen), impulsive, skilled (see how he drives a motorcycle without any training), sly, and very dry with his humour - which is always a plus point for me.
He also appears to be a savant, learned throughout his years (as he has been in all incarnations) but actually putting this compiled knowledge into practice. Morphing through Grace's window, stealing a card key and working out how to solve the problem sans beryllium clock. This trait was carried over into his radio dramas and graphic novels, which is a good thing. I also love the environment he lived in - the change of TARDIS was a bit of a shock, but I loves the Jules Verne-esque steampunk interior - all those dials and switches!
His only downside, I think, was his choice of assistant in his single episode. I know that she was probably the only choice, but she was a bit hapless as a companion, really. She didn't do much until the finale, and even then she didn't travel with him. Mind you, travelling alone at the end made space for Izzy (from the graphic novels), my favourite companion so far, and Lucie (from the radio dramas). He worked well with Lee Chang, but that partnership didn't last long, though.
All in all, I loved the Eighth Doctor. And, of course, he had to make the hardest decisions, fighting in the Time War. Long may he reign!
Honourable mention goes to the Tenth Doctor, David Tennant. While not my favourite, he was perhaps the best Doctor. He made the character and programme really accessible, through his characterisation and interpretation of the storylines. Tennant changed Doctor Who into a programme universal to anyone who wished to watch, and for that, I salute him too.

For me it would have to be the late, great Jon Pertwee and his portrayal of the Earth-exiled third Doctor. He was dandy, flamboouyant and a bon viveuer .. but enough about Jon
I had the fortune to meet Jon in Liverpool shortly before his unexpected death in 1996.
He was witty, charming and had excellent interactions with his oft named team and was a staunch and tireless campaigner promoting the show to the end.
