Firstly howdoo - KM fan turned lurker.

during all the years every one of the teams on the series were obviously well behaved and well mannered, but i was wondering - is it known if any teams were ever expelled from the series, either because of rowdyness or just general rudeness towards the cast or producers?

I don't think there was, but apparently they killed off Daniel's team in series 8 on purpose because Gideon was so annoying

Hi, macloud, and a warm welcome to the forum. According to Knightmare's creator Tim Child, teams were only ever curtailed for two reasons: the end of a series and one severe case of homesickness. He did later reveal, though, that some of the cast would have happily seen him kill off bad teams!

apparently they killed off Daniel's team in series 8 on purpose because Gideon was so annoying

We can speculate but I'm not sure that that's entirely accurate. In his interview with The Eye Shield fanzine (Issue 5), Tim Child did mention that team, and what he said was: 'They were all eleven, and became almost uncontrollably excited about their adventure! They became totally absorbed in what they were doing, and we had to think about toning the adventure down, just to calm them somehow! Worse still, was that Children's TV does not allow swearing or blaspheming in any show, so we had a lot of editing to do! We must have cut out about 200 "Oh God"'s ! (It was more like 2 dozen actually...)'

          I have to agree, actually.

It would seem a bit odd to kill them off so close to the end of the dungeon, too.

They were in losing status because they didn't take the SIGHT potion. It was a bit of an unfair death because it may seem a bit forced, but to be fair, they could have gotten through the Corridor without it; the fact that he got hit by a blade was - well, unfortunate, but they did die legitimately.

It's just a shame that they died when they did, as they could have won if they'd gotten past the CoB. I don't think they were killed off deliberately, though - or, if they were, it wasn't anything to do with Gideon; I'm pretty sure that the production team may not have wanted a victory so early on in the series!

Were the team killed off for being annoying?

I highly doubt it. They were quite humorous to watch and at the end of the day, all the production team want is exciting television that people will watch.

Were the team killed off deliberately?

I guess it depends on your opinion of the whole "losing status" thing, which is very vague. Personally, I am not of the belief that "losing status" was a formalised and ritualised state that a teams could get into that spelled certain death at some point in the future. I suspect it is little more than a summary of the production team's desire to show exciting television - which is hampered by watching a team for 30 minutes that you know have already failed.

The question comes down to whether the production team would ever change their mind about a team. The only anecdotal evidence I have is that the production team didn't expect my team to win (there was no ending written for us) and yet we did. The former implies that we were in a "losing status". The latter indicates that the "losing status" was irrelevant.

To expound on my answer to the original poster's question in general:

The amount of interaction between the production cast/crew and the team was minimal and I just don't think there would be enough time for anyone to be irritated with the players. Each room would involve us for about 5 to 10 minutes of setup and filming and then we'd get sent to the green room for at least 45 minutes while they prepared the next room.

Occasionally, a member of the production crew would wander in for two minutes to encourage us to plan our next moves, to see if we were okay, to tell us to go to lunch or, in one case, to tell us some oddity regarding how the next room was to be filmed. Also, during the 5 minutes setup that we were involved in, there were opportunities to chat to Jackie and Hugo (although they generally remained in-character and I suspect were under strict instructions about talking to us).

Aside from that there was a very strict division between the players and the cast/crew. We couldn't freely walk around the building, we never met any of the cast other than Hugo/Jackie until AFTER we had done all the filming, we even had lunch at separate times. In fact, I say that we never met any of the cast until after we'd completed filming - we did SEE several of them during a fire alarm. But even in that situation, we were segregated.

In short, the production team went to immense lengths to try and prevent interaction in order, presumably, to maintain suspension of disbelief and to prevent cheating. That anyone could get truly annoyed with a team (for anything other than incompetence) in order to justify their expulsion simply seems impossible to me.

                Wow...that's a lot of segregation!

But anyways, I only assumed that that's what they did after reading this:

Believe it or not, we are all still bitter about the way we were killed - they really hated us by the end, and all because of Gideon's cockiness!! We do remember that we were only 12 years old, and naive with it. ~Justin Kent

But anyways, if I could pick any team to kick out, it'd be Rebecca's team from season 8. They literally shrieked the place down, confusing poor Rebecca with directions. Or at least if I couldn't kick them out, I'd take them outside to calm down

Maybe we're missing something regarding how they died. Maybe it was more 'fixed' and we didn't see it.

With that said, I find it hard to believe that they were killed off due to being disliked. I wonder why Justin thought they were hated.

It would have so been funny to have seen outtakes if there were any of a team being rude and/or escorted off set!

Alas however, no such incidents occured and no such clips exist!
