The Causeways, especially in Series 6 when the eerie background music and the Frightknight's timer were added, plus Play You Cards Right in the later series

    S*** scary or what?

Series 3 was definitely scary. I too loved those animated dwarf tunnels, especially as the life force was often superimposed on the side just to make it even more tense. Somehow the "real" dwarf tunnels in later series never did anything for me, or perhaps it was just the expectation of the appearance of Brother Strange looking for proverbs.

I'd forgotten quite how scary Play Your Cards Right was. The music was just fantastic and often the goblin horns would be sounding (which always made we more nervous!). Even though I personally never thought it was that difficult a puzzle (I know plenty of people disagree) the fact that so many teams were frantic and clueless made it even more tense. Incidentally, what I thought made it more difficult was not the puzzle itself- following suit or rank seemed common sense- but the fact that it was often difficult to make out what the cards were. Is that the Queen of Diamonds or Hearts? I know Treguard had to occasionally point out what the cards were. And when they did close ups of the dungeoneers next to a set of cards, I think some of them must have forgotten which they'd pressed last. Hence Treguard started telling teams to keep a record of their judgements.

In any case, it was darn scary. And it proved that a long scene with a pretty repetitive puzzle, if handled properly, COULD be really dramatic and tense.

I can honestly say that Knightmare never scared me (even though I was but six years old when I first watched it).

the dreadnaught (is that the correct spelling?) and the catacombite gave me nightmares...

i had to hide the book with the skull picture on the front before i went to bed so it wouldnt attack me.

The Cavernwights and the Automaton scared me when I was a kid. You get so used to each room being a seperate danger that I got really unnerved by the threats tyhat could follow the Dungeoneers through the Level. The fact that the Wights roamed around Level 3 didn't help!

I was 5 when I started watching KM, so it really scared the hell outta me at times!! In the earlier series I just remember being scared of what was coming next, the anticipation was a killer!! I also remember being scared of the ghosts, it was the noise that did it! Whenever I was scared I would hide behind the sofa, so I must have looked rather daft!

Then when Lord Fear came along, that was it! I seemed to spend a lot of the time hiding, dreading the moment that his eyes turned red. Come to think of it I was about 8 or 9 when he appeared, I must have been a really wimpy child!! Looks around nervously But I am really brave now though!!  😕

                    😮

THE GOBLIN HORN! OMigod he's being chased and he's got to run through the room NOW NOW NOW and look his advisors panicked and made a mistake....

I liked the 'real' dwarf tunnels. They looked so much more realistic, plus I was old enough to really appreciate Knightmare by then.

The Automatum (is that how you spell it?) was also scary. And eeky fireballs. That's why advisors are heard to scream "PUT IT DOWN! PUT IT DOWN NOOOOOOOOW!" whenever the poor dungeoneer had held the spyglass up for too long...

This sounds stupid, but I was terrified of the Brollachan's sudden appearence and his deeeeeeep slow voice 😮

Yes, the red eyes/fireball combination was always terrifying. I always felt very sorry for the Brollochan though. I may have this wrong, but there was only one thing about him/it that made me shiver, and that was the sharp teeth...or am i going barmy?

Since I don't think anybody's mentioned it (I may be wrong), I'll put in a word for the Corridor of Blades. Fabulous sound combined with an excellent design. Along with the Block and Tackle, the two obstacles where I really expected teams to die. With the teams who stumbled their way through the previous puzzles, I just thought "Just wait until you get to the Corridor of Blades..."

Two thingsscared me: Automaton and Mogdred.

I think what made most things so scary was the music and Hugo's convincingly terrifying warnings. And that Automaton was just terrifying. He just kept coming, slowly. It was like Doctor Who.

Mogdred was just really creepy. You believed that he truly was evil. How could that actor play two such different people!
