  • Later series being easier - what is the cause?
    C Crazedhefer
    General Discussion

Several things made the later series easier than the earlier ones:

1). In the early parts of the quest (level 1 in particular) mercy was shown to teams who made errors, for example letting a team from series 5 (not sure which one) survive despite not taking the token (arrow) to show to Gwendoline. In earlier series, this would have been punished.

2). 'Filler' rooms. In seasons 1-3, survival in almost every chamber was considered an achievement. In seasons 4-8 there were a lot of rooms where it was practically impossible to die, which meant that they were only there to advance the quest. This took away a lot of momentum by eliminating the sense of being constantly on edge that the early series carried.

3). The introduction of scrolls and spyglasses obviously changed things. The idea that scrolls would give cryptic hints as to which clue items to take was great, but spyglasses were too easy to obtain. Teams should have been made to earn them.

4). Finally, one gets the feeling that quests weren't original enough. The biggest problem was that every quest seemed to follow a familiar pattern- get some clue objects, trade one of the objects with a character for a password, negotiate a floor puzzle, find a way to progress to the next level. What happened to "Any knowledge of previous quests will be of little use"?

Despite this, I don't think that Knightmare ever became too easy. It was still a prestigeous and rewarding honour to beat the dungeon with that one win per series average maintained. And lest we forget that in series five, only two people reached level three and three for series six, so they must have been doing something right.

Jeez, that was long! Those are my thoughts anyway.

I have always felt that the series 7 ending was the best, mainly because it felt like the only one (with the possible exception of series 1) to be fair on the team in question. All other final teams had their quest cut short through sheer bad luck of not having enough time to see it through to it's conclusion. Barry's team on the other hand had time to get through the whole dungeon and earn their quest victory, albeit having had to pick up the Troll hammer along the way. It was also nice to see that they were given a proper send-off and not just whisked away like the final team from series 6.

  • Knightmare VR Pilot Discussion

    Knightmare VR

Reading through some of the posts here, it seems that not everyone can agree on what they think works and what doesn't. Having just seen the full pilot, I can now give you my thoughts:

    1. I agree with everyone who has said that there should be a return of the real-life ante-chamber, with a dungeon master (probably Treguard) and maybe an assistant and a transision from real life to VR upon entry into the game.

    2. I agree that the team format used in the original show should be brought back, with their role adjusted to compensate for the fact that the 'avatar' can see their dungeon environment.

    3. It would be nice to have some more of the more memorable characters from the original show included, and voiced by the original actors if possible (e.g. Hordriss, Smirkenorff, Elita, Sly Hands etc.)

    4. The visuals look impressive and suitably atmospheric.

    5. Similarly, the music (corridor music aside) does an excellent job.

All in all, aside from one or two niggles, I am pretty enthusiastic about what I have seen so far. Yes it is not the same as the original, but then it shouldn't be and it was never going to be. It will be a brand new Knightmare, yet one which will hopefully, on the whole capture the spirit of the original show while opening up the doors for a new generation of adventure-seekers. So far, we have only had a pilot, the full show (if and when it is made) will need time to find its feet, learn from it's mistakes and allow the audience to get used to it.

    Personally, I can't wait!

  • Video Game?

Hi folks, apologies if this is in the wrong forum, but I couldn't find anywhere better, so here goes...

I found this link to the Sinclair Spectrum Knightmare video game by Activisiontm http://www.ciunga.it/jxspeccy/arc/3.html?g=KNIGHTMR&128k=1 and have played it online but am having problems escaping from the first dungeon. I know that you have to take the food and water and give it to the old man and ask him, at which point he gives you a magic shovel. The problem is that no matter what I do, I just can't seem to pick up the food. I've tried moving the dungeoneer next to the food and pressing 'T' for take, 'RETURN' and searching through the list of objects, but none are appropriate. I have even tried entering 'Take' as a one-word command. Does anyone have an idea what I could be doing wrong, or what I'm not doing? Any help that anyone can give would be greatly appreciated.

Incidentally, I managed to solve this problem when I played the original version of the game (on the Spectrum) but that could be because that was so long ago that I can't remember how I did it.

  • Knightmare Character Jobs

Skarkill would make a great Bailiff, perhaps.

Or Majida as a health and safety officer, "Ees too dangerous!!"

Or Hordriss as a school teacher/headmaster.

Can anyone think of any others?

  • Hordriss (season3)

    General Discussion

Hordriss was at his best when he was totally neutral and dungeoneers had to tread carefully when meeting him. If we see Hordriss return in any future series, that is how I would hope to see him. It was this mysterious, almost sinister quality which made him my favourite Knightmare character.

In later years, he was still a strong character but his allegiance with the powers-that-be made his appearences more predictable and therefore less dramatic.

OK, Here is a couple of things I need to sort out:

    1. What exactly is PCing? How does it work and why do people do it?

    2. How do I add a signature to my messages?

I can't think of anything else at the moment, if I do I'll post it (probably on this thread if there isn't any clutter).

    Newbie Welcome

Hi folks, I'm new here so I thought I'd introduce myself...

My name is Gavin Fox, I am 21 years old and hail from Ossett in West-Yorkshire.

I have been a massive (and I mean MASSIVE) fan of Knightmare since my very earliest memories of it as a 5-year old. I've actually been visiting the forum as a guest for several years and have wanted to join but never got round to it ... until now. I am looking forward to becoming part of what is obviously a widespread and enthusiastic community. As Treguard would say, the only way is onward, there is no turning back!
