a world cup winner would have loads of cash anyway

my point was when I was a kid I got 30p a week pocket money so a £20 prize would have been amazing

if I'd have won, looking back on it now I wouldn't care about having a trophy; I'd just be dead chuffed I'd won.

a trophy has no value: it's not as if you'd sell it anyway.

    no, no no, no. no!

if you'd won knightmare, huge bothered hat about a trophy!

surely the kudos would be worth enough alone! you don't need a trophy to prove your greatness!

whereas... think how much cash 50p was as a child. you could buy a beano anda tiny toon stickers pack. A cash prize; whatever the rules might have stipulated, would've been huge; you could probably have completed Pog Series 1 or something...

the sheer fact of winning knighmare is enough reward on it's own; being amongst only 8 teams to have triumphed against the best the dungeons can throw against you is immense whether you have a trophy or not... I'd take the cash.

  • Who should be the dungeon master/lady
    E Enigma
    Knightmare a la Maison

If Hugo Myatt couldn't be persuaded, I'd like Barry to do it. It has to be someone who has in some way 'mastered' the dungeon. Lord Fear's just too good as a bad guy to become ambiguous and Hordriss is a bit straight-laced.

  • Series 1 - Episode 5
    E Enigma
    Series 1

Saw a first series episode for the first time ever last night due to being too young to see the first series the first time round (my parents didn't get round to having me until 1984) and too involved in local elections to see the first few episodes this time.

I can see what Tim Child meant by the first few epsiodes being a bit slow. I agree that inserting lots of non-puzzle rooms/outside areas doesn't help, but I thought Merlin and Folly talked for far too long before getting round to what they were actually meant to say. Casper the talking key was irritating. I don't like the idea of the dungeoneers having an acting guide; they ought to have to work everything out themselves. I was disappointed the didn't die in the moving keyhole room. Having them panic and try to follow round the moving keyhole whilst the timer ran down and the deliciously dark life force sequence ran its full length would have been wonderful; the kind of thing I remember from series 2 and 3 the first time round.

  • the grand tradition

    General Discussion

Not being a science fiction/fantasy fan, I differ from many of the others on this forum. Yet united we stand, in passionate advocacy of surely the most progressive and dynamic influence on our collective childhoods.

Is Knightmare really that closely related to the rest of the fantasy genre? I don't think it is. It shares more with the comic book tradition. The best example is Lord Fear, a classic comic book bad guy. Suitable sarcastic, all-powerful yet fatally flawed. He can't resist telling us more than he needs to (despite knowing spyglasses are littered through the three levels) and this proves his hamartia, allowing the dungeoneers to defeat him time and time again (though never to completely destroy him). He reminds me of a Lex Luthor, or even a James Bond villain. (James Bond being very closely related to the comic book tradition).

Am I being deliberately perverse, in order to satisfy my distaste of all things Star Trek?

  • new helmet
    E Enigma
    General Discussion

after seeing yesterday's episode, I just wondered if the new helmet (in addition to allowing the use of the sight spell) was intended to prevent dungeoneers from seeing too much around them. Often in the earlier series' dungeoneers seem to know where they're going without instruction from their advisors. In yesterday's episode the movement was quite clumsy and the dungeoneer seemed unsure of where he was going, even in the initial dwarf-tunnel when most previous dungeoneers have just ploughed straight ahead. The new helmet goes in at the neck a bit more, meaning the dungeoneer has to rely more on his/her advisors, which is surely the point.

what do other's think? Personally I preferred the design of the old helmet, it being more distinctive, but if I'm right about this, then far from each series being made progressively easier this might represent a concerted effort to seperate good teams from poor teams (with dungeoneers being able to see less themselves teams with poor direction commands will probably lose in number puzzle type rooms)
