    To quote from the site:

"Their Life Force started fading after a while and could only be restored by magic. Reached the wellway to level 3, and then died as the light to the chamber began to fade."

Whenever I read this it seems very spooky, the nearest a team has come to death due to running out of life force (rather than making an earlier mistake, such as the team who didn't take the divining rod...)

Can anyone describe or provide video evidence of what actually happened, as I'm sure it's not quite as mysterious as I'm reading it to be 😉

It was quite strange, but as far as I can remember, it was due to an earlier mistake. They didn't answer Merlin's riddle correctly, and so it's more than likely the magic they needed should have come from him. He was quite fond of restorative spells. I guess he'd have given them VIM, ENERGY, or something similar if they'd been successful. Usually such spells were absolutely necessary, not just an added bonus to use if you took too long and wasted life force. Visually, it's pretty much as the description on this site says.

At least, that's what my memory tells me. It may be mistaken, in which case so am I.

My favourite restoration spell is ERG. Don't ask me why.

Quite right, if the team had answered Merlin's riddle correctly, he would have given them a spell that would have restored their Life Force.

I thought the team were cheated however for two reasons:

1.) They only got the one riddle whereas previous dungeoneers in Merlin's room got at least two or three.

2.) It turned out to be a trick question: What does an elephant forget? Of course:

          AN ELEPHANT NEVER FORGETS!

            Hi there.

This was on the first episode of Knightmare I watched and thankfully recorded.  Yeah, Steven's team get the hard question from Merlin wrong.  Their last item of food was from the level 2 clue room.  For sure Merlin would have given them some form of 'Energy' spell if they had got the question right.  After Merlin they negotiate the hall of spears and then the combat chess room.  In the chess room, a graphic shows their life force status running down as amber stopping just before reaching red.

The next room was the wellway to level 3 with a quest item in the other corner of the room.  The screen starts fading and the red life force skull appears (when the bottom jaw comes off).  Treguard says 'Light Source fading, quick team you need Merlin's magic here.'  The team quickly yell at Steven to walk forwards but the room goes completely dark, the life force skull goes full screen in the death sequence and Treguard continues 'But then again; you haven't any!'.

Maybe their quest ended because of them running out of lifeforce with no food or magic and that caused the room to fade as though they were losing consciousness?  Don't know really; what does anyone else think? (this is my first post so hope I haven't missed any points  ;)).

            Cu

Maybe the lights went out to stop them reaching the wellway, since it was decided that without any spells they'd stop there.

Maybe.  I think though that without knowing what Merlin's spell was and a complete absence of information from Treguard after the light faded other than how good they are at disappearing (referring to earlier in the quest), we will never know for sure the official reason for the quest ending.

However another thought came to me.  Wasn't there a few teams in the earlier series who had to shine a candle in a dark room to light it up and if they weren't able to do that they perished on the spot?

That's possible - the spell could have been FLARE or something. Mind you, they'd still have needed food at the wellway and there wasn't any there.

It's possible Merlin would have given out two spells. An ENERGY type spell, and FLARE or something similar. However, my guess would be that the darkening of the room was added for effect, and it was just ENERGY, VIM or such that they'd have got from him.

sounds to me it just added to the effect of the teams death due to lack of food.

It could have been the other way around. The spell might have been a FLARE or similar spell (as Treguard said "Light source fading"). And as they didn't have it, the creators decided to have the Life Force run out then. It wouldn't have been the first time the LF was slightly modified. Maybe they'd have put food on the well, but as the team didn't have the spell they didn't bother, as they were going to fail here anyway.

                          Or maybe not.

Actually it could have been a combination of the two.  They must have had to use Merlin's spell in that room, let's say it was FLARE.

The lifeforce was running consistently because it was amber/red in the previous room.  Perhaps they had to use the FLARE spell to light the room up and then there would have been some food at the bottom of the wellway.  The lifeforce in this instance would not have run out in the well room but would have been critical when they descended.

That sounds the most likely to me, Whiteknight. The life force graphic is added after the programme is completed, isn't it? In that case it might just have been modified to give them a bit more time if they weren't certain to die anyway.

I liked this episode. Mildread was impressed with the talisman of invisibility! In my opinion, the team should have died in the Bomb Room since they took the wrong door after Mildread gave them the clue. They thought that since "The right door has a bomb on the other side", the left door (opposite to the right door) would have the bomb behind!

A locked wellway, eh? That's a Knightmare first

Just managed to get through with the key before the Automatum caught them!

Classic moment, falling right on top of Cedric when they came down the wellway! Cedric wasn't too pleased, but they scored 3/3 on his riddles!

Look closely at the Wellway top shot, and you'll see a small slide at the bottom which the dungeoneer slid down inside the wellway. Not sure if this was intentionally meant to be seen on TV...

Whistling in Ariadne's lair? I wouldn't have thought a spider would respond to whistling!

Used the AVAUNT spell they earned from Cedric to kill the ghost in the clue room. Nice animation for killing the ghost - perhaps another AniGIF is in order...

The annoying Casper Key was in the clue room again. Took him, as well as a bar of gold. Gumboil was drunk on the bridge again, but seemed to have a better sense of self than the last time he was drunk! Casper called Gumboil some name that I couldn't make out (did Challenge dub over it?), and Gumboil thought the insult had come from the dungeoneer! Had to bribe him with the gold to get through.

Called Merlin by pressing an M symbol on the floor. Liked the banter between Casper and Merlin in this scene! Didn't get magic from Merlin because they got an easy riddle wrong. I would have got it straight away, an elephant NEVER forgets!

From then on, the team was in losing status.

I think the dungeoneer got spiked by the second spears in the Corridor of Spears, but were let off, probably because they had a death scene lined up for them later Played well at Combat Chess though, but died in the next room since they didn't have Merlin's magic!

Shouldn't have had the candle in shot when they did the Enter Stranger routine. You can see two flames on the candle during the fade. In addition, the camera position changes slightly during the fade.

Oh dear! A temporal disruption while the Wheel of Fate was spinning!

This team were OK, but made a few silly mistakes. It was ridiculous of them to take the right hand door in Mildread's lair, and I still think they were let off in the bomb room, as the fuse goes back a bit before they exit. The Dungeoneer was good getting all 3 of Cedric's riddles with no Advisor help, though! As for Casper's retort to Gumboil, it was something about being a 'dolt', and has been since original transmission. Aside from adding ad-breaks, I believe the only editing done by Challenge was 17 seconds from the end of Series 6 Episode 14. The between-room animation was very speeded up between here and the Clue Room! Shame they didn't get Merlin's Elephant riddle, even Casper knew that one-how on earth could an elephant forget it's MEMORY?! They were doomed from here on, and died from what could really be described as a Life Force drain, although it was really because of a mis-answered riddle.

An unfair death I felt. Although an easy question, Merlin usually asks teams 2 questions and 1 out of 2 is usually ok to get magic, so I think Merlin should have asked another question for the team to have a chance.

Also they were an excellent team, and I felt they could have gone all the way but cruely killed them off.

Also what a cock up though with Mildred. The hint was clear to take the left door but they take the right door, however as said, they thought it was a trick and it would be the opposite door, but to be fair, I would have taken the Left door.

Good Episode though, shame about the Death, Its the last episode of Series 2 tomorrow so I'm guessing from Friday 9th July, We start with Series 3 and then in sequence we will go Series 4,5,6,7 and 8. And then I'm guessing they may show them all in a loop again when all shown.

The dungeoneer answered all the questions correctly on there own!

When Cedric told them that they had to whistle to her I thought that they would meet Lilith or someone but infact it was Ariadne - perhaps i should have been whistle to it.

Used the spell on the Cavern wraith before collecting Casper and onto a rather drunk Gumboil on the bridge.

The death was probably unfair as the dungeoneer was good at riddles up until now, it was really his team that let him down. Easy riddle all the same

wasn't really an unfair death... they took the wrong door and got the question wrong. plus they took to long in the well room and starved!

i think it's the only life force drain that was true.. it's not like they didn't have an exit or anything stopping them from going further.. no food, no magic... death

Mind you i don't see what they were only giving on question.. i guess because they took the wrong path.. BUT Mildred can't be trusted as with seen before.. and the team weren't all that bad i guess.
