Frightknights and other Ron Lyon Sculptures

Hi Erol....
Ok...I am just off the phone with Ron Lyon the creator of the Frightknight. (Tel:01962 882348)...he has confirmed that this is one of his Frightknights...he says he took a number of them up to Norwich with him where the show was produced - these had different weapons, broadswords, axes and scimitars - some were left handed and some right handed....
He did make one specific model that moved and could be made to look as though it could fly -but this was for use in the production of the actual programme (this one had a broadsword).....and is maybe what Tim Child is referring to..
Anyway, I can find no better or other expert...and I now, more than ever, fully stand by my description of the sculpture...I feel I gave all the information I had and was very open with the concerns some people had....This is a Frightknight...

Firstly welcome to the forum.
From the info from Ron Lyon above it looks like you have bought a prototype Frightknight. It certainly isn't the same as the model that was actually used on Knightmare, but that isn't to say it's not genuine. I would be very suprised if it was a fake, and there has never been any known cases of this.
The only person who will be able to confirm its authenticity is Ron Lyon himself. Perhaps you could contact Ron and e-mail/send him the picture.

Hi there, i acquired a few months back a frightknight from an ebay seller who assures me the item is genuine and has given me Ron Lyon's telephone number as proof of his word. However i have hit hard times with the cash and need to sell the item. It is based on the frightknights seen on Knightmare, but with a subtle difference and that is the positioning of the head, the sword is a scimitar sword and is in the left hand of the frightknight. It has Ron Lyons name on the bottom and is a wonderful item to behold. If anybody is interested please reply to me on here. I have a pic of the item and if you need to consult Ron Lyon then I can provide the number to you also. If you live in London, then i can allow you to inspect the item before purchase. Please reply; the more offers the merrier,

Hello there, I am currently selling a Knightmare related frightknight on ebay. However i need some help contacting Ron Lyon for confirmation of its authenticity; although it has a label with his name and address on the bottom i need to know more about it. If someone knows some way of contacting Ron Lyon please let me know. Failing this if anyone knows somewhere where I can get this frightknight checked out in London, id fully appreciate it,

If you type in Knightmare or frightknight on ebay you will see an item similarly resembling that of the frightknights in Knightmare. Please have a look at the item, which is meant to have been made by Ron Lyon; and if you are interested in the item please bid on it, my ebay id is bahistoryerol. It is an item i acquired off ebay a number of years back, which is of a frightknight but with a few differences to the KNIGHTMARE version. It has scimitar sword which is in the left hand rather than the right. It is excellently crafted and has Ron Lyon's name and address on the bottom. I spoke to the man himself (I DID, HONESTLY I SWEAR ON MY LIFE!) He said to me the item is genuine, no one can sculpt such a figure as good! It is made of steel and is superb. Im not looking for thousands of pounds, three hundred pounds or just short of that would suffice. If you would like to see some pictures or learn a bit more or would like to make me an offer please contact me on muzwiz@ntlworld.com.

Hi all, I realise that this thread has not been looked at for a long time (really long!) but it is a starting place for me to ask a question.
I was given a Ron Lyon sculpture as a present back in 1986-1987 and it is extremely similar to 2 I have seen pictures of online, I was wandering and hoping that if anyone sees this message they may be able to shed some light on the sculpture (i.e. is it from Knightmare. Possible value e.t.c).
I am going to attempt to insert a picture and look forward to hearing from you if you can help.

I think that's too early to be Knightmare-related (they didn't introduce the trophies until 1991) and it doesn't have the same helmet or pose, but the design is pretty similar overall. No idea about value. Ron described his sculptures in The Quest newsletter here if that's of any interest:

Wow, thank you for such a prompt reply Canadenne. I was actually thinking it may have been too early as I have been a fan of fantasy since a very early age ane I remember watching Knightmare and enjoying it but not as a child.
It's not something I would want to get rid of as it was given to me by my girlfriend at the time and although we are not together we are still best friends aven after 36 odd years!

Hi Roger. Thanks for posting on the forum following our email exchange. I hope you have many more years ahead of enjoying your sculpture.
It's a shame there's so little online about Ron Lyon. His sculptures are striking and his frightknight is iconic. (It's a shame too that the frightknights didn't get more of a role in Knightmare: I can't have been the only watcher at the time who expected frightknights to meet dungeoneers in Series 5.) If anyone reading this would like to contribute to a Knightmare.com article about Ron and his work, please get in touch.
By coincidence, Winchester was also home to Knightmare artist David Rowe, before he moved to Wales.

Hi Drassil, again thank you for replying to my original email and for your welcoming words to this forum.
Whilst I can't really comment on Ron's life and his work I thought I would post on what a small world it is and how nice it is to see common interests with other people.
When I started senior school at the beginning of the 80's I was introduced to a band called Hawkwind who have been around since the late 60's (and are still going!!). One of the associates of Hawkwind was a certain author called Michael Moorcock who I have just read Ron was a fan of. He (Moorcock) wrote several songs with them and indeed actually wrote two books based on the legend of "The Hawklords" giving each band member of the time a background in a fantasy world. Hawkwind also did a whole album and tour based on his books about Elric of Melnibone which Ron mentioned.
When I was given my sculpture a few years later I loved it's look and can imagine it appearing as a character from one or more of his books and I am sure Ron did too.
I don't know if this will be of interest to anyone but it just reasonated with me on how our likes are interlinked.

My husband is Stephen Lyon, Ron’s grandson.
I was wondering if anyone had any sculptures they were willing to part with (would be happy to pay)
Steve hasn’t got a relationship with his dad and when Gramps passed away everyone got a sculpture but he didn’t.
I’ve seen some for sale but I’m not sure if they’re the real deal or if they are replicas. I can’t ask his Dad as we don’t have contact with him and Joyce (Steve’s Nan) sadly passed away last year so I can’t even talk to her.

First of all condolences for your loss Amanda and I'm doubly sorry the family situation is far from ideal.
Whilst I don't have any myself there are seemingly a good number of them on a well known Auction site. You can contact the sellers directly for any proof of authenticity and can then make an appropriate judgement call. I only know of one occasion when a previous show participant parted with theirs so the chance of getting one of those is particularly remote.

I have 2 of Ron's Knight statues for sale on ebay. To be clear, these are not the ones for the TV series, but were made by Ron at an earlier point.
