  • The new KM episode is up!

    Knightmare in Geek Week

I've only just discovered this new episode (and wow, did it come as a surprise to me!) I can't really do more than echo many of the previous comments. The appearance was slightly disappointing but considering the rush that's entirely forgivable. Once I accepted that I could look past the ropey CGI antechamber and so on. I'm really glad it used the early series look, there was a strange, creepy atmosphere with the paintings that's still there in the computerised versions of them.

One problem with adults was that it just looks so odd having a tall dungeoneer who stands above all the cast. There must be a spell somewhere that can sort that out...

Most amazingly of all, after all this time it's still the same Treguard. I was amazed and delighted.

It's certainly demonstrated to me that Knightmare still has what it takes and given time to have a bit of polish would be just as good as ever.

(See how irritated Iona Kennedy was getting while rowing Barry through the sewers.)

That was a bit of a missed opportunity. I was looking forward to seeing Barry puncture a bit of Graystagg's pomposity.

  • Should the eye shield have been ditched for season 8?
    H Helvellyn
    General Discussion

I thought the point of the Eyeshield was supposed to move gameplay along by not requiring the advisors to have to spend time guiding the dungeoneer out of the room when everything of interest in that room had been done. Now this point was completely missed when the Eyeshield was first introduced but they got the hang of it later, so keeping it in Series 8 made sense.

Its really dissapointing that Tim hasnt updated us on the situation.

Ive been watching all the old episodes on youtube the last few days and it never ceases to amaze me how gr8 knightmare was and how gr8 a new form of knightmare could be.

That's what really surprised me when I found episodes on YouTube last year. Normally I expect disappointment from things I watched as a kid, but Knightmare still worked, and I still found it tense and scary (although not to the same degree, admittedly) at times.

But do they have to be GIFs? Perhaps I've misunderstood; I thought this was about drawing some new ones (or perhaps the BBS can't handle PNG smilies?)

If they are PNGs then PNG's transparency features should sort that out. Make the edge pixels semi-transparent instead of anti-aliased to a specific colour, and they'll blend in with any background. The only possible issue is browser support. PNG feature support was definitely an issue a few years ago, but I imagine they're mostly OK, if not perfect, these days.

I've not tried drawing much on a computer for quite a while, but Knightmare-themed smilies sounds like fun, and I generally have more success with small numbers of pixels. Don't hold your breath, though. I'm notoriously bad at getting around to doing things.

I agree, having a section with a real set added to Knightmare quite well. The only drawback was seen when one dungeoneer was startled by a noise of someone behind him - only it was the cameraman.

Hi Jackal, I think your game is the cat's pyjamas - it's really well put together and it's both fun and challenging to play. I managed to win for the first time yesterday, and to complete the whole quest in one today. I have to say, that random choice of five doors in deepest level three with no clues at all... ooh, nasty! 😮

I only realised later that I'd got the right on right first time, but died in the next room and thought I'd made a mistake, so went back and tried all the others!

  • Dungeoneers falling to their death

    Behind the Scenes

I dimly recall seeing a clip or a photo of what looked like the someone in the production crew showing a dungeoneer what to do for what looked like a fall (the dungeoneer was standing on a blue box). It mades me wonder if "Sidestep to the left" was possibly not quite as bad as it looked.

  • SOMETHING STIRS

    News Discussion

I just want Tim to produce something that keeps the essence of the old knightmare but with a faster pace (series 3) and new graphics. I'm sure it would be an instant hit on TV.

I'm not even sure about new graphics; the airbrush graphics of the first three series gave a strange, slightly unnerving other-worldly feel to Knightmare that was a large chunk of its atmosphere, and their lack was one of the reasons why the return to the gloom of Season 8 didn't work too well. Of course these days they could be 3D-rendered in realtime, thus removing some of the limitiations that led to their demise in the first place.

Mark Knight was great in that, as he was in everything he did in Knightmare.

Barry's (in)famous Season 7 quest managed to get Sylvester Hands in a spot of confusion, but that could probably have happened to any actor who'd run into Barry on form!

    Series 5

I can see why they got confused about how many floors they were going down, the windows are nearly as big as the doors and 7 down is a long way and certainly harder to count then the 1 down of other teams.

I fully agree with you there. The Descender is something I was never sure about, whether some of the openings were open doors or just windows, and by the time the advisors got the message to the dungeoneer and the dungeoneer shouted "stop" they could easily miss a door. I'll have to watch closely some time to see if the scenes always add up.

    Series 1

Perhaps this is why they hedged their bets in Series 4, just writing a list of "The Players", which was never very helpful for working out who played the door monsters!

Much to the relief of the actors concerned, no doubt. The door monsters really were a low point in Knightmare for me.

  • Series 3 - Episode 11
    H Helvellyn
    Series 3

Looking at it carefully, it does appear that the dungeoneer stumbles off the path and genuinely falls. That's a great pity in a way, because all too often on Knightmare a mistake is either punished with death (or leaves you having to trust to luck in the case of clue objects), or turns out to not really matter at all. Not often did it just make something harder, but when that happens it's all well and good because it makes the whole thing seem less linear.

  • Positive things about Series 8
    H Helvellyn
    Series 8

The Reach wand seems to be overly-maligned to me, since it gives a new way of doing puzzles in a less unwieldy way than stamping around the floor.

Though the main problem with that wand was that where the cursor showed up had nothing whatsoever to do with where the dungeoneer was pointing it...

It's one of those things that would work better these days, being easier to do. A laser pointer and a computer picking up the spot should work fairly well, as long as you can stop the dungeoneer pointing it in peoples' eyes. Mind you, Lord Fear sometimes looked like someone was already doing that to him...

The return to a more confined, interior view was a good one, although the implementation was a mess. The Reach wand seems to be overly-maligned to me, since it gives a new way of doing puzzles in a less unwieldy way than stamping around the floor.

The search function is un-good and no matter how many times I click "always keep me logged in"........ it never keeps me logged in. I'm not ungrateful though, I'm just saying I know what you mean!
It works for me, but uses cookies (there's probably no other way it could work), so if you use a different computer or delete your cookies (how irritatingly American that word sounds!) it'll lose the login.

Man - Woman (the only alternative that stands up to any scrutiny IMO)

Only if you assume that it is referring to a representative of the male half of the human race, and not the alternative name of the race as a whole.

Then there isn't one. All other suggestions simply come under "something else", not opposites, and make no more sense than saying "turkey" is the opposite of "wombat" (although I admit that this runs the risk of becoming dangerously philiosphical and off-topic).

Fire - Douse (admittedly this is stretching it, treating fire as a verb)

Has to be a noun only.

OK, I'll try Fire - Extinguisher

And for light, how about shroud (or should it be shrud 🙂 )
