Main item when I go to knightmare.com front page is "we are pleased to report that we will be running a Knightmare Convention in the very studios where Knightmare was filmed. You can buy tickets from the EPIC studios website. The convention runs from Friday 9th May (with Knightmare Live) until Sunday 11th May."

also wouldn't mind seeing a book forum

They usually have copies on Amazon (I buy extra copies to give away to people )

They come up on eBay as well - I picked the first four books up (separately) for around a tenner total, including P&P, a couple of months back. Although that was before the new episode was announced, which may have spiked prices.

They really are worth reading. Well, the first four are; the later two just make me sneer

I don't know about the fourth. #1-3 are fairly good, but I didn't finish Sorcerer's Isle.

The original line of four books was clearly superior. While still not exactly anything to challenge Tolstoy, they were a more satisfying read, and the stories were set firmly in their own era, with no links to the future - Treguard clearly had no knowledge in them of our own time.

Which is odd in the case of the fourth. #1-3 seemed like they were set before the TV show, but by bringing in Pickle and having Treguard live in the Middle East for years (!), #4 had to be "between series" of the show.

One interesting peculiarity in the books is the portrayal of Pickle; he is always described as being an imp. On one occasion, a character says, "You look like an elf!" to which Pickle replies, "You look like a baboon!" I don't know whether that exchange was meant to be defiance on the part of Dave Morris against the series, by insisting that Pickle is not an elf.

Also, he's stored in a bottle for an extended time in book 4, ala Majida's introduction on the TV show.

"You're in a chamber" isn't helpful - "chamber" isn't a word most people would naturally use! If it's a corridor/cave/clearing/etc, that's a different matter to an extent, but how much does it matter? All the dungeoneer really needs to know immediately on entering a new area is (1) where to go, (2) where NOT to go [i.e., down a pit].

After that, if they don't require immediate movement [e.g., bomb room, corridor of blades], next comes who or what else is there that might be relevant, but what the area actually looks like to the advisors never really needs to come up except insofar as it relates to clues or dangers. You'd be as well saying "You're on a solid floor" or whatever and skipping rather than altering "room".

If this is to be the end, I'm really happy for the show to have had its own opportunity to say 'goodbye'. It helps close the chapter on a very distraught 10-year-old searching the September TV listings from 1995 onwards!

Definitely a better coda to the show than Knightmare VR if it does turn out to be the very last really-this-time ever episode, I'm sure everyone can agree!

wonders idly if it's going to be bunged in with the S8 rights if Challenge get that far

Overall, I have mixed feelings from this one-off special. It shows that a modern-day Knightmare could work, but at times the tone of the original show seems to be lost and it comes across a bit spoofy at times.

    ...

The episode didn’t get off to the best of starts, to be honest. I didn’t really like the introduction at all and the pantomime-type behaviour made it appear ‘spoofy’ from the offset, which didn’t really encourage us to take the whole thing seriously! Getting the team members to act beyond the capacity of just being a dungeoneer and advisors does not come across well. The whole situation also meant that we didn’t get the classic ‘Enter Stranger’ moment. The REFRESH thing with Treguard was also unnecessary, pantomime and rather stupid.

Agreed with all of the above, especially Treguard's Theoden moment.

It’s good to see the old life force clock back in a similar form, but it seems less prominent than it was in Knightmare’s early years – the heartbeat has been removed and we don’t see it being replenished when food is put in the knapsack.

Also, I can kind of see why they put the head straight on the dungeon background, but it meant there was no green/amber/red indicator to go with it.

I don’t know how the team decided to take the bauble and the key – they didn’t seem to reject the Downer at all! There didn’t seem to be any clue to do so either.

I wonder about that a touch... they'd been told to take the bauble by Sylvester in the Olgarth room, so it was between the "downer" and the key... and if they got to the lift with the "downer", what price there'd have been no keyhole, and they would have been told to sprinkle it around to make the lift go down?

The film seems to jump suddenly at 22:53 – a blatant editing error!

There were two jump-cuts - one in the Lord Fear scene, and one with the advisors shortly afterward. The latter was particularly jarring - surely they could have cut to the dungeon view for a moment to cover it?

Why did Treguard feel the need to say ‘Dismiss’ after spelling out its letters?

Verucca and Emma both said the word after spelling REFRESH and IGNITE earlier, ja? Perhaps it's connected to not having the letters appear on-screen.

Overall, I think it’s not a bad job at all at paying homage to the original show...

It felt like Red Dwarf: Back to Earth to me - the pieces were there, but mixed up and in with stuff that wasn't a great idea. Hopefully, if there's a series to follow, then as with RDX they'd work on the tone more.

Plus their win seems very brief, I like later wins when they make a bit more of a deal out of it, the team looked a bit fed up to be honest. 'ugh, that's it' when the maid was freed.

It was more than slightly strange to give them a quest to "free the maid", and then the maid is represented only by a cut-out still of their head.

C'mon, if you were going to use that as the quest, book the actress to appear and congratulate them when they win!
