  • Dungeons that only made one appearence
    A Aldarion
    General Discussion

Regarding the original post the swinging pendulum room indeed only appeared once. The room with the green monster made several appearances, once when Cedric attacked it.

Mildred appearing as Treguard and attempting to goad the dungeoneer into the cooking pot. Treguard was put under a spell but the team avoided the trap.

    Cedric killing a dungeoneer

The Medusa room and the dungeoneer/team turning to stone

One team failing to take a guiding rod and trapping themselves because each exit lead back to the room they were in

I can only remember the giant making one appearance (not to be confused with the giant troll)

    Gretel being trapped by Ariadne?

A team dying because of darkness (first ever quest)

    Moghdred posing as Cedric

Mildred killing one dungeoneer by leading them into a bomb room due to them previously taking the wrong object

    Who's "the giant" ?

Quote: I do like that her series 4 lair has 2 parts to it though. The build up and then the actual lair.

Inspired vaguely by a certain other monstrous spider perhaps? You know whom I mine, the one whose lair was a hell of a lot bigger, more complex in its construction, and more offensive to the nostrils in the book than in the film

  • Scary moments

    General Discussion

The "play forever" scene haunted my nightmares occasionally during the interim years, between seeing it on TV and seeing it on the internet. As did the "dark room" scenes.

But the simplest scares are often the best, and, as I've said before, my main memory was of the various "chasers" or "stalkers" - i.e the goblins, the trolls, the Automatum (sounding bigger than he looked was a neat idea) ... and Behemoth/Frightknight (whose name[s] I could never remember). His scene in 3x06 is in a way the "scariest" of all the stalker scenes, because of the way he suddenly looms up against the camera (sword held high, with a yell of triumph). Even Treguard seems spooked ("Flee, team...!")

The goblin and mire-men death scenes are pretty good too.

Discounting the "Edward Gorey rooms" I imagined in a previous post, and discounting that message on another forum which I can't mention here...

I'd like to have seen the wall monster feed on someone, seen the barely visible monster at the end of the corridor in Series 1 kill somebody, seen somebody take the Fire Exit, or seen one of the early "stalkers" (esp. Automatum or Behemoth) actually kill.

  • Series 5 Episode 13 (Mon. 17th)
    A Aldarion
    Series 5

Good Dungeon to you all on this fine morning! This episode provided us with some great quotes:

Advisor: "He's on fire now" (referring to the causeway)

    Advisors: "Say Constantinople"

    Chris: "What?"

    Advisors: "CON...STAN...TI...NOPLE!"

    Chris: "CON...STAN...TI...NOPLE!"

Some great bee effects in the room with Skarkill. And on the causeway, Chris really did come very close to falling off it near the end, didn't they? And later Brother Mace asked them 3 questions on the Crusades. Funnily enough, like them, I wasn't sure on the 3rd question and guessed con...stan...ti...nople- and whaddya know, it was right! In a rare moment for S5, the door opened to reveal Smirkenoff rather than the Decender.

The team almost avoided using the Spyglass in Level 2, but after a hint from Treguard used it in the end. Timed Out in a neato looking indoor market, and at Julius Scaramonger's stall for at least the second time this series.

But Chris said it wrong - didn't he! He said CON..STAN..TIN..OPEN!

Hadn't he ever heard that They Might Be Giants song? Or that 1920s song that spells it out (c-o, n-s-t, a-n-t, i-n-o-p, l-E!!)?

More ridiculous than that; Christmas filmed in July. 😠

Yes, but you know - don't you - that all Christmas programs/music are recorded in the summer.

Except Presley's first Christmas LP which was recorded in April or May (come to think of it, I'm sure Slade's grate-est hit was also recorded in late spring)!

After a while they would have had to change the title sequence - visually.

But I prefer the original music (in 12/8, with the primitive synthesizer; as opposed to in 4/4 with the Fairlight-y string sounds).

It has more of a "medieval" quality (well, no it doesn't - "prog rock" medievalism)

  • Series 1 - Episode 7

    Series 1

The insult contest, we all agree, is a television classic!

The dark monster in the corridor - I guess the primitive CGI ensured it could never be any more convincing as a threat than the toadodile of Series 2-3. Shame - there's the germ of a good secondhand idea there. Doesn't it remind one of another "fierier" creature that appeared at the end of a long corridor (in the film, not the book) and was initially almost invisible?

When Frightknight Mark 1 appears, it sounds like one of the advisors says "oh no, there's a monster!" - confirming that all of these anonymous knights are "less than human"

  • stop bashing season 4 so much!(long read)
    A Aldarion
    Series 4

I like the outside locations - and the fact that it was the last series before they introduced a certain ineffective "pantomime villain". But there weren't enough stalker scenes in this series (and, back then, in my mind, that was what KM was all about!)

  • Series 3 - Episode 16
    A Aldarion
    Series 3

Isn't this the episode that rubs our noses in the fact that the game was fixed? This team wasn't doing any better with the riddles than their predecessors, but because it was nearly the end of the series, they were allowed to survive perils where their predecessors would have been killed off. Only a few episodes since "say hello to the goblins!" we have someone survive the same ambush - except it's two goblins and two mechanical(?) warriors.

If they'd been killed off, another team would have gotten the five-minute-wonder booby-prize. That exploding dungeon scene was quite something to behold. But imagine how much more sadistically compelling it would have been if it was inflicted on a contestant who'd barely got beyond the dice-throwing stage.

So that's it - I realised within seconds that I'd got his name wrong, and wondered what had led me down that particular blind alley.

  • Series 3 - Episode 11

    Series 3

All the teams in episodes 9 - 11 were really slow-witted and dumb weren't they! Failing to get the Orc question pissed me off almost as much as failing to grasp what the trapdoor was for.

At least this has one of the great "weird" rooms - the squares obstructing the view. "She's in a bit of a mood" raised a smile, almost as much as the "ask "him?"/"her?"" business with Mrs G.

Disappointment: the Behemoth showed up twice and didn't utter a single RARRR!!

  • Is Knightmare "officially" the most underrated TV show ?
    A Aldarion
    General Discussion

With websites like this and the RPG one, it can't be underrated!

Most underrated kids TV program of all time - if you ask me - Gilbert's Fridge*[/i]*! (Hmm, pity I didn't think of using "Marmaduke Smarmy" as my handle).

  • Legal Knightmare DVDs
    A Aldarion
    Bring Back Knightmare

Absolutely in favour. But you've brought up an issue that I need to rant about.

Those people who say "DVD's dead - it's all going digital" are forgetting something - digital copies of audio/video things have to be kept either on a PC or a recordable disc - both of which have a lifespan of very few years.

Every time a format is declared "obsolete" - like VHS or audio cassettes - they (the corporations who think they own/control everything) are insulting all and sundry by robbing us of our memories, the influences that made us who we are.

The fact remains: people want physical copies of audio/video things which will last decades rather than years - and we are entitled to have them.

The "preserve vinyl LPs" cult has been successful - vinyl LPs are now the only format that is gaining currency, not losing it. Which should inspire and motivate us.

The "preserve VHS"/"preserve audio cassettes" cults are still too small, and growing too slowly, as people haven't yet realised the threat to their collections posed by the recent all-too-short-lived recording media. They need to gain ground and become as powerful as the "preserve vinyl" cult.

It makes me sick to think that there's a necessity for a "preserve DVD" cult already. Why do you think Blu Ray hasn't really taken off - it's because we're still repairing the damage done to our collections by the phasing out of VHS. And they (the corporations) should be fn well compensating us for this damage - we shouldn't let them plot their next insult-the-public scheme.
