Also, I did say we failed the first take of the Block and Tackle, but I think it is important also to bear in mind the context: that Giles's enthusiastic four large steps took him extremely close to where the floor began to fall away - whereas some teams earlier in the series started on the right hand side, right near the front of the chamber. Thanks, Brett. Even if the crumbling bridge had been in Series 3 and 4, I'm not sure it would have fitted your statement, which also referred to Series 5. Beyond graphics, that also applies to the revolving disc which served as the spindizzy in Series 3 and the Place of Choice roundabout in Series 4 but wasn't in Series 5. Actually I have a question about that. I'll start a new topic.

i would love more episodes and series of knightmare....... i would also love to make a tv programme.

Just wondering whether there are enough new ideas to make Knightmare work. Hugo Myatt said in 1994 he thought it could run for at least another couple of series. But most of the suggestions I've come across seem to revolve around 'improved graphics' or a debate about VR. What about the actual gameplay, if we assume the quintessential helmet remains? Should the reach wand become a drone controlled by a team member, for example (or perhaps that was for the Satellite Game?!). More centrally, somewhere I read that Tim Child said during Series 8 that (four series on) the Corridor of Blades was the best test they had for a co-ordination challenge. Is that still the case today?

This is really interesting. I’ve genuinely been wondering about it ever since it was first broadcast. I remember becoming convinced at the time (or maybe a couple of years later during a rewatch) that the BUT spell would have magically summoned a goat that would run at Mogdred and headbut him off the screen. This makes much more sense.

In the early ‘90s, adding dynamic objects to Eye Shield sequences was too complex due to limited motion tracking and compositing tech. Today, AR and game engines like Unreal enable real-time interaction, making such sequences fully immersive and interactive, enhancing gameplay with responsive characters and objects.

It was good to raise the profile of the opposition - I agree with the reviewer who said John Woodnutt was underused as Mogdred, although to be fair to the production team they had an awful lot to get right on the first few series - although I would have preferred the main baddie to be some kind of wizard, in keeping more with the genre, and secondly I felt the distinction between the opposition and the powers-that-be was too clear-cut (in-fighting among the opposition notwithstanding), which ironically reduced the number of subplots that could have been developed. Conversely, for me, Lord Fear was over-used to the extent he seemed to be there more for entertainment than gameplay.

It seems to me that 'going back' could actually benefit the quality of quests, and that it could be managed in a controlled way. Not least by rockfalls, pursuing opposition and other factors that make going back obviously not an option in many scenes. But also by having several transporter pads, and perhaps a token system to use them. I just think this could add something useful to the quests if thought through in a way that permits some revisiting of characters and places without, of course, making the quest repetitive or tedious for the audience.

The only time I liked the eye shield was the end of episode 1 in series 7 where Simon was in the dwarf tunnel. It should have been used in more scenarios like this.

Well at Christmas time, as with many festivals, it seems to me you have to go with the flow to a certain extent. Even if you're super organised and arrange things early, you're going to encounter busy shoppers and pick up the sense of bustle. Tim said "Enjoy the rest of the summer, boys; I know there isn't much of it left". I agree with you that the Christmas scene might not have originated with Tim; it might have come from ITV, and often he must have been balancing the competing needs of novelty, budget and audience taste. The implementation of his ideas, too, would have been through the personalities of the production crew, actors and actresses. I remember being impressed that they had managed to source the evergreen in August; perhaps August wasn't the onslaught that it has become these days regarding the arrival of Christmas stock! Isn't it kind of strange that the warmest month - August - is followed only four months (and not something like six months) by the darkest? Projecting forward - the deadest (December again) is followed four months by the liveliest, with Spring in full activity.

I don't really know whow KM in VR can work, who would be wearing the headsets? or maybe the Dungeoneers will no longer be blind ? So far modern tech hasn't really made any impact or improvements on Knightmare, other than maybe quickness. Even the CGI rooms and effects look worse then how they once were. It seems the old school appearance of blue screen and paintings is still the best format. Knightmare VR would have to really change the format and style of game play. Then it wouldn't be Knightmare anymore.

I am sure Tim could have come up with some ways of increasing the difficulty on Level 1 in Series 4 - extra clearings with goblins/assassins/the ogre etc. Corridor of Blades?! That would be more likely if the production team thought we were unlikely to progress very far into Level 2 or 3, and wanted to introduce another team soonish (obviously even more so earlier in the season). Not sure about decreasing it, maybe a clue about throwing a spanner in the works - but I don't think Tim would have done that, even had we got all three questions correct. I take it Hugo was improvising something vague "let's just say ..." to give a sense that everything we did had consequences. It didn't occur to me when we were filming it - until relatively recently in fact - that everything was scripted. Even now I'm not convinced absolutely every word was scripted. Best wishes, Brett

That looks very interesting. Wonder if some of that would be used in a new series if a new series happened. Would be cool to find out the plans that were in place if the teams were not killed off when they were.

A somewhat interesting co-incidence, at least to me, is that our team's visit to the Tower of Time during Episode 16 of Series 4 occurred more-or-less halfway through Knightmare (being at the end of series 4). In this episode, at the 'centre' of Knightmare, we encountered both Merlin (from Series 1, the first series) and the Corridor of Blades (in use up to and including Series 8, the last series) - the Tower of Time then referencing the beginning and ending of the original Knightmare run.
