Christopher's team from Series 2 mistaking a spade for a giant spoon. Even funnier that they decided to name it the "Spoon of Interest" and that was entirely the team's idea. It's said that you should always call a spade a spade.

Maybe they were bored of the game and decided to make up their own quest? "We seek the Fork of Destiny..."

Yep I used to post on there between 2000-2002 I think. I was Dark Grey Wolf of Norbex and a few others.

Uh huh, the name rings some bells. Now all we need is for the Brigadier and Kellogulation to saunter over here and essentially we have a non-Vegetable Revolution reunion! Break out the Watered Lemon Wine.

Don't think this is the first episode of the series we hear it, but glad to see the goblin siren is still in use at certain points, most notably PYCR. It's about ten times better than the marching army sound effect, which is a bit pants in comparison. Mind you, I don't think it was meant as a replacement, merely an extra hurry-up.

Will anybody ever beat Play Your Cards Right?

I wish I'd kept a copy of my 'Zine contributions, too. I remember writing a genius poem once (something to do with a bumble bee?) that's now sadly lost forever. 😕

Shame it all went downhill in the later years. The day I noticed that White Line Warrior wasn't even writing his/her/its comments below the white line any more, it truly jumped the shark for me...

Probably better we've forgotten exactly what we've written because, in my case anyway, I'm sure my contributions were nowhere near as good as I remember.

I found it weird that WLW's comments, which were part written in large text and part in a smaller size, felt like they were being shouted for the first half and whispered the second, a bit like some of those image macros and motivational pics with the black frames you get on the Internet today. Teletext>Internet!

I was proud to call myself a 'Ziner way back at the turn of the century. I wish I'd kept some of the stupid emails I've sent to them, they'd be fun to read again! I remember writing stuff about Ford Focuses being rubbish (who drives those now, eh?), unusual things you can do with a walking stick, daft quotes from TV adverts etc. I like to think WLW (Whirlwuh?) went on to become Top Gear's the Stig.

    Bring Back Knightmare

Ooh, I heard someone mention GamesMaster in a similar topic and had to bite. Now there's a show that could so easily be brought back for the modern market simply because there's nothing quite like it on terrestrial telly at the moment, plus there's a huge market for modern video (computer?) games. The only thing against it is the fact we have the internet to see previews of new games these days, but surely there's room on TV for what's become such a mainstream hobby?

KaM, I have to agree on the YouTube thing. If the Internet were never invented we'd have a KM DVD release by now, I'm sure, but there isn't any motivation for a re-release on the part of the guys that could *really *make it happen because it's all available online. I think, as you say, the casual Knightmare fan is always going to be satisfied with simply this, but I reckon if they saw a DVD box set in Tesco they'd say "Hey, I remember that show! It was really good..." But then there's always the stumbling block of profitability. Perhaps a 'Best of Knightmare' compilation, bringing together some of the better moments/quests from all eight series, would be more suited to public consumption and an easier, more cost-effective pitch? It ain't a 8-season box set but it would be better than nowt.

With regards to a comeback, perhaps going underground, a la Aegis Quest (which looks fantastic, by the way), is the way forward? Because unless someone with a whole wad of cash and an obsession with Knightmare comes along, sad to say I can't see any mainstream progress on that front.

Probably said this before plenty of times, but these commentaries are fantastic. They remind me of when me and my brother would watch the repeats on Challenge/Sci Fi and talk endlessly about cack going on in the episode, paying not a blind bit of notice to the plot or stuff like that. Not that these commentaries are anything like our conversations, because they actually have a sense of humour.

The commentaries also have a replay value matching that of the series. It's nice to pick a random commentary once in a while and listen to other people discussing the same nonsense we did all those years ago.

Thanks to everyone concerned, and keep up the excellent work! Interesting to hear all these different opinions.

How many entries are there? 1,000ish? Shouldn't take too long to copy across in my experience, maybe a weekend. Is there no way of exporting the raw xml history files, or is it not one of those kinds of wikis?

Bad Influence used to give games two scores, one from the girls and one from the boys. Er, presumably in order to prove that girls play games too, or something.

Interesting, that. I know of no other games show that did that at the time or even since. I'm kind of glad we've moved on from the days of positive sexual discrimination in the gaming media. I wonder if the introduction of a female assistant for Treguard was a product of that?

What's a game "aimed at girls", though? I don't see why a game shouldn't be universalisable, never mind what gender the main character is. Some games allow you to choose and everything.

I'm talking about games like those awful Spice Girls and Britney dance ones in the mid-90s. Plus, I'll wager there's never been a good Barbie game... not that I've ever played any of them, it's just there seems to be a general consensus they're terrible.

Now I'm not saying boys can't enjoy them in the same way a girl could just as much enjoy a 'lad's' game (All Action Kill Zone etc.). I guess Knightmare falls into the latter category, though it doesn't specifically set out to cater for a specific gender like Barbie's Super Shopping Time or whatever. Hmm.

I don't really like TGWTG.com, but I quite liked Spoony even before he reviewed Knightmare, so you can imagine my surprise when he posted the vid. Oh yes, and this in particular seems incredibly familiar...

  • What makes a 'good' episode of Knightmare?
    H hindleyite
    General Discussion

I think my 'dream episode' of Knightmare would *have *to have a comedy death in it, preferably following a series of silly errors the production team let them get away with. I think I was more entertained by some of the poorer teams by many of the winning ones, though I have to admit I wouldn't like seeing Level 1 over and over a bit like what Series 3 became at one point.

I did like Mrs. Grimwold though. I think she'd have to be in it as well.

    Behind the Scenes

I've heard one of the bird sound effects from Season 4 (and maybe some of the others) in the original Age of Empires. Only noticed that this week, actually. Might not be the *same *clip, but it struck me as incredibly similar.

At the risk of increasing the level of swooping generalisation in this thread...

This reminds me of an old debate about video games, the fact there were no really good ones made specifically for girls. The trouble is, they were incredibly condescending and, to be honest, really bad. The best games were not ones that specifically set out to win over one gender or the other, just to create a good gaming experience in much the same way as Knightmare.

I guess it's just that the vast amount of girls aren't exactly won over by killing goblins and slaying dragons, just the way they're brought up to be. I wonder what the female-orientated version of Knightmare would have been like? Would it have even made it past the pilot or gone the same way as those terrible games for girls that flopped miserably?

Or, that if there were more female game designers, eventually there would have been a good video game aimed specifically at girls?

It very much sounds as though you were enjoying recording them, and I can tell you it's as much fun listening to them, for this KM fan anyway. I'm even tempted to give it a go myself, though I'm not exactly a fount of Knightmare knowledge.

    Currently listening to Series 4

I'm just listening to some of these commentaries now and have to say they are wonderful. I reckon they'd certainly be a worthy addition to any official Knightmare DVD release, should that ever come to fruition. Can't wait for more.

    El Rescate Del Talisman

Don't know about you guys, but from the episode on YouTube, I think the music really puts a dampener on the whole thing for me. Foregoing my worse-than-poor knowledge of Spanish, which I suppose didn't help, the whole atmosphere just seems completely different from our Knightmare. Whilst the set was quite impressive and the rooms as slick as ever, it just isn't scary at all. The music is good-ish in that it's reasonably well composed, but it takes away a key element of Knightmare's success - its ability to make kids pee their pants in fear, and is just too jolly and unnatural sounding.

I have to say I prefer Labyrinthe.
