This is a wonderful thread. It's interesting to find out where these iconic backdrops were filmed.
Having recently taken early retirement, my partner & i have joined National Trust & English Heritage and begun visiting, starting with sites near to us in Kent. We recently took a short trip across the great divide to Bodiam Castle in Sussex.
Couldn't resist posing for a piccy on the "causeway".
Ok, i'll play. (Answers from Nic Jenner)

I'd never really noticed before but Helen certainly snatched that grub quickly at the level 2 clue table, before Gundrada could take any more. She wasn't always the most proactive dungeoneer, but she certainly didn't wait to be told there.
I was just reading the article on this website by Jason Karl (formerly Julian Smith) about his appearance on "The Satellite Game". The piccy of his team is slightly blurred, but are they his Knightmare-winning teammates Mary Dixon & Vaughan Simpson?
It's now September and the evenings are getting darker, which means that it should be the season to watch Knightmare once more....
When choosing their objects in the level 2 clue room one of the advisors said to take the key & gold as we can just remember the emblem.
Presumably this team had done their homework and learned from the downfall of S1 team 1.
"Those who arm themselves with the weapons of their enemies are ever likely to fail." Treguard's closing remarks at the end of Stuart's quest possibly refer to two choices the team made, not just one. Explicitly, they're a reference to the dagger they took from the Level Two Clue Room (yet again, your dungeoneer can't see to fight, so why bother with an offensive weapon when you've been given no clue that you should take it?) but implicitly it may also be a reference to the 'deal-with-the-devil' they struck. Even had the team found a way past the Dungeon Roundabout, they were almost certainly going to lose anyway, especially if they cast the spell Mogdred gave them. It's quite obvious that making a deal with Mogdred defeats the whole object of the game - if it's a quest for truth and justice, why do a deal with some tyrannical megalomaniac who, far from championing truth, appears determined to silence anyone who might give the dungeoneer advice contrary to his own e.g Treguard.
Good point. I assumed that Treguard referred to their pact with Mogdred, but yes, it does also apply to their selection of that silly dagger.
Notable that they immediately agreed to serve Mogdred. (Some teams had a few moments of doubt before refusing him, but this lot didn't even seem to consider the possibility.)
However, their reaction when Treguard questioned them about what Mogdred had said/done was telling. The advisors all looked rather guilty and none of them seemed to want to admit that they had agreed to serve Mogdred.
"Dark magic has no unpleasant side-effects." Yeah right, Mogdred. I wish that they had cast his spell, just so we could have seen it's (inevitably unpleasant) effect.
Incredibly, altho it was the obvious red-herring, the dagger actually seemed to be their top choice object as they originally chose that & the "stick", before changing their minds and going for dagger & honeypot.
The previous time that i watched this episode, i didn't particularly notice the pose and funny walk as they departed.
Yes, this was a very enthusiastic and competent team.
Recently my amazing partner bought "The Art Of Knightmare" for me as one of my birthday presents.
It is a beautiful and informative book. The artwork looks as awesome as ever.
Some familiar names in the role of honour as well....
Sorry. What i meant was that i didn't think this scene with Mogdred would have been the final encounter (the last room) of their quest.
Mogdred might not have returned during their quest, but presumably there were still other challenges ahead.
Ok, to continue this trend of leniency towards this controversial scene: I think it was the circumstances rather than the scene itself that felt wrong.
Given that Knightmare was originally an autumn broadcast and most series ended immediately before the festive period, this closing xmas scene might have been ok in a different series, for example when S7 T7 received their trophies.
It was really unfortunate that they chose to use it in an episode where a team had just been cruelly cut-off on the brink of victory. After that, the "never mind lads, at least it's nearly xmas...." seemed like a real slap in the face.
Yes, i like that idea.
Drassil makes some great points above.
I agree that S4 T1 got a tough deal with these two spells. Tougher than the other teams mentioned. Perhaps because it was deemed undesirable for a series-opening team to win.
Faced with the chief antagonist, who was about to destroy Helen, it seemed logical to cast the spell which had been described as "most powerful" rather than the "most humble" spell. They hardly had a moment to realise that Rachel wouldn't have time to complete the very long "TRANSFORMATION" spell.
As others have stated, i assume that the "BUT" spell would have temporarily stopped Mogdred, causing him to adopt a stance of, "BUT, why should i kill you just yet? I enjoy watching fear, so i shall enjoy watching yours.... " (Rather like his threats to S2 T3.)
It seems highly unlikely that this scene with Mogdred was intended to be the final encounter.
The team had barely arrived in level 3. Compare the quests of Dickon and Giles (and even Alastair) and it would appear that Helen & co still had some way to go. Probably the transporter pad puzzle, surely the corridor of blades and Dooreen, before the final quest-object room.
Also, Treguard uses "DISMISS" which was still used for teams who fell early in level 3, (S3 T6, S5 T3) not "UNITE" which was saved for teams who fell at the final hurdle. (S3 T4, S3 T11)
The "TRANSFORMATION" spell might have been intended for use like Dickon's "OPPOSITE" spell, or to transform something into their quest object at the end.
Merlin says: "You will have to take the path without my help.... remember, others have done so and still survived."
Merlin means: "You've blown it. You're now in losing status. However it would look really bad if i personally terminated a dungeoneer, so i'm gonna lie to you and give you false hope. The goblins can finish you off in a few minutes time."
Obviously the concept of a Knightmare "champion of champions" is purely hypothetical, but it's interesting that it assumes the eight winning teams would automatically be eligible, plus a couple of "nearly" teams.
But would that actually provide the best selection of teams?
After much deliberation i created a list of "Knightmare's top ten teams" and ironically only five of the eight winning teams were on that list. I actually rated several losing teams higher than the winning team from their respective series.
Ok, maybe that sounds absurd, but it takes into account the fact that certain losing teams were excellent teams who either made a single mistake in level 3 or were extremely unlucky, whereas several winning teams had fairly unchallenging quests or in one case had several blatant reprieves which effectively guaranteed that they would win. (Admittedly these inconsistencies are down to the producers, not the teams.)
Losing (or undefeated) teams that i rate as better than some of the winning teams include:
Leo S3 T4 (in my opinion, the finest Knightmare team ever)
Martin S3 T11
Giles S4 T8
Sophia S6 T6
Nathan S8 T3
There were a few other losing teams who narrowly missed out as well.
As for the lady in the red dress in the foreground, I've finally recognised it. It's Lillith's outfit. We know from Quest 6 of Series 2 that Lillith was partial to a drink.
That's a very impressive observation, i'd never really paid much attention to the extras here.
It's interesting how some of the costumes were recycled across several series.
Looking back Lillith was far from being the only character partial to a drinky. Knightmare wasn't exactly overrun with teetotalers. Great what they could put on kids tv back then. I wonder how much of it would pass the sensors these days....
The whole thing reeks of contrivance. Nonetheless, the rumour has never been formally corroborated.
First rule of politics: never believe anything unless it's been officially denied.
Myth: Dooreen, the Level Three door monster in Series 4, was definitely played by Zoe Loftin.
Origin: This website past and present; previous versions of Interactive Knightmare Lexicon entries.
Reality: Like most Series 4 characters, Dooreen was never credited in Knightmare's end credits. I'm not aware of any other official source crediting her.
Dooreen could just as easily have been played by Samantha Perkins - and I think she was, because:
Dooreen's voice sounds more like Samantha Perkins as Malice pretending to be an old woman than any of Zoe's voices
The mouths seem to match
I also think it's more plausible than Zoe playing two of the same type of character and Samantha playing none.
What do the rest of you think?
Your reasoning sounds good.
There is one other possibility. Could it have been Erin Geraghty?
It's very good of Anthony to contribute his experiences. These recollections from behind-the-scenes are very interesting to those of us who only ever saw Knightmare from the sofa.
It's notable that he mentions problems with his earpiece. Several dungeoneers, particularly Ross in S3, seemed to have difficulties hearing their advisors.
Very obscure observation on this episode today:
When Giles looks down at the transporter pad in the final room, why do we see Dickon's trainers, not Giles'?
(The image was apparently re-used from episode 13.)
