In passage 61 of The Quest for the Dragon's Egg (a.k.a. the gamebook section of The Forbidden Gate), Pickle remarks that a large pineapple "Looks like a hand grenade" then adds "At least, it will do once hand grenades have been invented" when 'he remembers that Knightmare Castle exists in medieval times.' However, there is evidence of grenade-like projectiles being used at the time of the Crusades. This post in The History Blog has details.

I've always heard it as "happy elf". I am hearing "happy elf" on relistening to it. I also don't like the way Pickle's exit was written, departing so abruptly without even bothering to say goodbye, and apparently without a kind word to pass along Made worse by Treguard's own unkindness: deciding that Pickle's an alcoholic based on the sight of one mystery bottle, and making an aside to the watchers about Pickle being demented. even though he'd developed a decent relationship with Treguard and seemed to be enjoying himself by Series 6. The last time we saw Pickle, he and Treguard thwarted Lord Fear and saved Knightmare Castle hand in hand (almost literally). Arguably that's more than a decent relationship. It's hard to reconcile that with the mutual bitterness of Pickle's departure. All in all, I wasn't expecting that post-credits scene, I didn't enjoy it and it cast a shadow over Series 7 for me. (Given that today is exactly three decades later, the phrase "30 years of hurt" comes to mind. This means it's also 30 years since Lissard's introduction and the origin of my username.) A better farewell for Pickle, and a less antagonistic introduction for Majida, might have helped those of us who struggled to appreciate her character at first. What if Pickle had left a note for Treguard, directly explaining why he had to go and leaving the new Helmet of Justice as a parting gift?

We had relatives near Telford. Haven't visited since the 1980's but unfortunately as with many things they change. Many years ago we'd stay over and walk fields nearby with clear views of the Welsh hills but since then it's been largely ruined by house and planning development. I don't remember much from all those years back other than it was so much better and a fun place to be. Do you remember the Earthquake they had around there, must be 40 years ago by now or thereabouts. Not a major tremor but it was big news at the time, something totally unprecedented for the area. It's only a vague memory. Welcome to the forum. Further fans of the series are always encouraged.

I never expected to say anything positive about the incidental music in Series 6, but I noticed something fun. When you next watch this episode, pay attention to the music when Chris is running through the dwarf tunnels to the Cloudwalker. Then compare it to the music in Doctor Who episode Rose when the Ninth Doctor (another Chris) and Rose are running to the London Eye (a track known as Westminster Bridge). I'm just making my way through Series 5 and it's so mind-numbingly still and quiet that I'll never dislike the Series 6+ incidental music. The only repeated criticism I've seen of it seems to be the fallacy that it "gives away when a Dungeoneer is about to die" which is just completely wrong. Whilst it is used in most deaths, it is FAR from used on only those occasions. More often than not it is actually used when Dungeoneers *escape *death, thus it really does achieve its goal of adding tension because when it starts, you know the Dungoneer is in peril but you genuinely have no idea whether they're about to die or not. Of course, you could say that this is also the case with no music at all, except that at least the music adds atmosphere and removes that awful clinicial TV studio-set silence.

It's a credit to Mark Knight's impersonation skills that so many of us mistook him for Clifford Norgate playing one character playing another character, even after rewatching Knightmare in adulthood. Lord Fear's hand materialised to grab Alan, but he used the gauntlet to stop Fear. Although Alan put the gauntlet on his right hand, it summoned a giant left hand. If I conjecture that it was Mark Knight playing both giant hands, I can't imagine it being as controversial as the Harris identity debate. Wilder speculation would be that Sir Hugh de Wittless exists as a personality within Lord Fear and that the gauntletted hand represented an inner conflict between the personalities.

The whole clue object choice thing is partly what I was waffling about when I said I could see why they were hesitant about offering the gem to Elita. I can think of a few reasons why they might not want to give it to her: Pickle has said some rather nasty things about her. It's at least plausible to think she might not be wholly trustworthy, although the evidence from their own Quest doesn't really support that, since she held to the bargain over getting them a ride on Smirkenorff. She's conducting some kind of ritual, thus I think they're not totally dense to ask what she wants to do with the ruby. If she's using it to summon evil spirits, create more disgusting and downright offensive clothing like her current attire, or something equally evil, then our "Truth and Justice" motto would perhaps make us question if we want to give her the means for the rite. Elita's unwilling to tell them much about what help she'll offer them in return for the ruby. "The key to my dungeon is the jewel in my crown." Note my dungeon, my crown. This is, I guess, Lord Fear's Dungeon, so it's at least plausible that the right thing to do is to keep the gem for the final encounter and not waste in on a smelly little cavern elf with no dress sense. It's also possible, of course, that the clue just meant "take the jewel because you'll need it", but I'm arguing not that it was needed later on, but that I can see why they had reservations about giving it to Elita. GG does like trying to help excuse teams just a little, to balance out being rather bitchy about them. GG also seems to like making nice orderly lists. 1. 2. 3. Mmmmm, nice lists. This is a very old post (only 20 years later haha) but I'd like to thank you for this as it offers some understanding to the team's actions that I hadn't thought about before. I always thought it was annoying that this team took so long deciding to give Elita the gem, but with the reasons you mentioned it does make it more understandable.

One of the interviewees in BBC Three's three-part documentary about Gaia Pope-Sutherland is her mother: named in the captions as Kim but better known to us as Natasha Pope (Velda, Brangwen and Morghanna in Knightmare Series 3, 1989). The story of Gaia's trauma, and her family's lasting heartbreak, is tragic and distressing. If there is one moment of light in the series, it's in Episode 3 when we see home video of Natasha/Kim at Dancing Ledge as a newlywed and mother-to-be, with references to happy times spent there. This would have been some time prior to 1998 so she looks similar to how we remember her from Knightmare. There are details of the family's campaigning on the Justice for Gaia website.

I was a huge fan of GamesMaster, especially the earlier series and have quite a few episodes on VHS. A comprehensive, tangible history would indeed be a fantastic thing to have. Several excellent points have been made however, as to why this would seem unlikely. Cost is one thing and time is another. As much as we all adore Knightmare, sometimes a show has simply just "had it's time" despite how good or even groundbreaking and influential it was. Sadly, Knightmare hasn't become a 'Mr. Men', 'Thunderbirds', 'Sooty' or 'Thomas The Tank Engine' which keep being repeated and even today have new episodes in regular production. Even GamesMaster has been revived and rebooted a time or two. While Knightmare has been repeated on a couple of channels over the years, and has plenty of clips on the ITV Children's Classics youtube channel, it has received next to no mainstream support. There was a great amount of buzz surrounding the showing of two episodes as part of CITV'S 'Old Skool Weekend', the 'Geek Week' episode and of course the convention, but this was all a decade ago and very little has happened since. Series 4 appearing on BritBox Was also wonderful, but that too seems to have been rather quickly forgotten about. I say all that to say while Knightmare does indeed have many old fans, who I'm sure would want to buy the book and perhaps even support it's production without it being readily available (Officially at least) it might be more expensive than it's worth if Knightmare isn't creating/getting any new fans or isn't anything more than a faint, if pleasant memory. Though I don't wish to appear negative, so it would be an amazing project, and with next year being the 30th anniversary of the final "Time Out" who knows what could happen.
