    Knightmare Convention

Following this for news - might have to jump aboard the DVD train as I missed two Q+As and a few other bits due to RL commitments over the weekend.

Will just have to fast forward through the bits where I ask questions as I still can't stand recordings of myself shudder

Completely OT and unfair, but I laugh whenever I see the abuse of the english language in the thread title from someone who, admittedly over 12 years later, is an english teacher

Can I just say that I think the choice of venue for the convention was absolutely perfect. A fine choice imo.

I could see an argument for that being the moment life force went from green to amber as well.

Maybe, but I'd have expected a flame to get smaller at that point rather than disappear completely.

This has given me an idea though; wouldn't a season 8 life-force clock that took the form of a fire instead of a pie have been a lot more exciting?

Most things that I can think of would be more exciting than that pie!

IIRC, one of the knightmare games used a candle for life force (and possibly time).

Definitely always seen it as a plume. Otherwise, it's a bit of a coincidence that it disappears at the exact moment that the central remnant of the helmet falls away.

I could see an argument for that being the moment life force went from green to amber as well.

However, I will gratefully accept Snowcat's proof and am only a little sad that the dungeoneer's head is definitely not on fire >:-]

    Series 1

Having not watched Knightmare in a while (and being more familiar with the later series), I completely forgot how harsh the beginning was. They really don't mess around! Level 1 is incredibly difficult compared to the later series where level 1 was more like a tutorial!

Not sure if they survived the first bomb room to be honest, was a bit touch and go. That on top of having to be told to take a second object and trying to put it in the knapsack, it is entirely possible that somewhere down the line they were put into losing status. But to be charitable, this was the first team with no idea what to expect. They had learnt to go quickly by the second bomb room!

(Also, did the wall monsters always mumble that much or am I old?)

Rewatched s1e1 today and noticed things that I've never really noticed before about the life force.

Two things: Firstly, how did I only just notice that it pulsed green/amber/red depending on how full it was!

Secondly, was that a plume on top of the helmet or was it fire to show that the dungeoneer was burning with energy? On phone, but will try and post a picture later (unless someone wants to oblige ) so you can see what I mean.

So in the US pilot, it featured the same great causeway (or numerical floor puzzle). They stepped on the 3 and still got over. Guessing there is no right answer then (and I am actually okay with that!).

Regarding the other teams and 'fairness' of deaths, TC made reference to some teams having their cards marked for earlier slip ups. Going to rewatch sometime with that in mind and comment on individual threads

    Don't laugh!

The dreadnort (series 6). Sumayya's death (which I know is coming) still makes me twitch and look away from the second you hear the footsteps and know she hasn't got the word.

I could (and may still) decide to go into detail, read past the first couple of pages and dissect the episode (finally watched it last night). But while I'm still on a bit of a 'ohmygodnewknightmareepisode' high:

Thank you to everyone involved. You had two (old) women sitting in a darkened room yelling at the TV like 8 year olds again. Sure, I have a few minor gripes but basically we loved it.

I see there have been many theories as to the secret of the Great Causeway. I'm quite certain that the combination refers to the number of hexagonal tiles in each row:

Choice of 2 blocks - step on the 2

Choice of 3 blocks - step on the 3

Choice of 4 blocks - step on the 4

Choice of 5* blocks - step on the 5

Choice of 4 blocks - step on the 4

*(This is the only Causeway to include a 5-block row, I believe. The unusual shape of it seems to be the key to its solution.)

Thread necromancy (and poster necromancy), but can I just say this is the most plausible explanation and you may have just solved a question that has been bugging me for 20 years or so

nah, we should have that knightmare convention we keep on threatening and have a 24/7 screening there

i personally would rather have a download. i've used soulseek to share files before and have found that useful for spreading music, resuming downloads and queueing things that are offline if webspace is an issue for uploading the file.

i can start copying in norwich to save any costs on TC part if it is needed.

There's a couple of rooms that were only used once. The one with the pendulum swinging springs to mind... may look up the series and be helpful at some point.

and that funky bridge thing that lowered as the first room in level 1 only happened once.

Okay, figured I would raise my head for the drama. I can think of a lot of people I wouldn't want to be mods because I think they would let it go to their heads and start stomping around going 'I'm a mod which makes me better' and they really don't need to be any more arrogant or have more ammunition to make them consider themselves elitist.

I think the fairest way to organise this would be anyone interested (so we don't get people badgered into the post) writes a basic summary of why they would be a fair choice then we have a democratic vote. If we make it registered users before a certain date only that should stop people making extra accounts etc (although why anyone would do that is beyond me).

I like Forester's suggestion that they can only affect posts reported by other members, but they could just report them themselves. Maybe they could only do something where there is definitely a problem and leave Illusion to the more contraversial decisions?

Spells should be about making life easier for the dungeoneers, not for making things possible at all.

Some of the locations in s5 were very pleasant as you say, but that's kind of the problem if you think about it. They're not very scary, and this isn't Wish You Were Here. The photographic locations never seemed to have any built-in hazards in them, unlike places like the Mills Of Doom or he Corridors of Blades/Spears.

i disagree on the magic front. mages are powerful, magic should be earned (not found on STUPID scrolls in level 1), preferably collected (i loved the fillet spell creation - that was a great plotline) or at least granted by a high level mage.

magic shouldn't be making life easier, it should be essential for beating a high up mage. and collecting the spell should be a big part of level 3 IMO

i can see your point about winteria though. i liked the mines they had in the earlier series, i can't remember when but it was early and i think it was through the eyeshield so possibly series 4.

they were all crumbling walls and it was so dark and deep and looked wonderfully level 3.

The causeways in seasons 5 and 6 were too long. They each took about five minutes to complete... far too long to stay interesting.

I re-watched the winning quest from season 5 a couple of nights ago, and apart from the causeway and the encounter with Aesandre, the dungeoneer encountered no other opposition in level 3 at all. Definitely the worst incarnation of the third level.

Fair point, I haven't seen it in a while (read: 10 years... it's not one of the ones i have on video). but i loved the whole winteria atmosphere and the fact that it was such a cool setting and idea.

so what do i look for in a 'good' level 3.

the fire and freeze/trick and treat spell riddles were a great idea. i would have loved to have seen one backfire.

i like having one huge causeway that you have to get the code for half of it then work the rest out by yourself. i did think the series 6 'find' and 'path' was too easy and would have liked to see the roman numerals back.

i never liked the play your cards right game. it was too repetitive and there was very little chance of a dungeoneer losing to bad navigation like there was on the causeways.

i liked owen the dragon (random but a good element of level 3).

i also liked roleplaying challenges, having to convince someone to take/do/drink/give something (gargoyle, freeze potion, some of the sir hugh encounters) should have been a task for every team in level 3. because i like good roleplayers, ok

i didn't like the very heavy riddle aspect of some of the early series. you get one riddle wrong and you're out. that's more luck than skill really. i would have liked to have seen puzzles that took the whole level to solve. picking up bits of an object/spell/code was always cool in my books.

i'll think of more ramblings when i sober up.

i'm going to be awkward (no comments) and mention series 5. winteria was a great setting and i wish we had seen more of aesandre as she was a great character.
